Feferi's POV

Night was looming over me like an ominous black cloud as I sat alone on the beach. I'm not really sure how long I had been siting there, but I know when I sat down there had been other people around. I had been on the run for a while now. Almost five months. I had to leave. When the Nazis started hunting down the Jews I knew I needed to leave.

My parents hadn't listened. They said they would be fine because my father worked for the government, but they were wrong. When the soldiers came to take them away they told them I was a maid and that I was not a Jew. The soldiers let me go. That's when I left. Some how I made it out of the country and I sat on the beach near the town of Marseille in France. There is a port nearby and that is were I was hoping to get a ride to America.

"Hey! You there next to the water!"

I jumped up and turned to see a tall man with shoulder length blonde hair standing about a hundred yards up the beach.

"Yes sir can I help you?" I asked as politely as I could.

"Theses beaches are rather dangerous at night for a woman like yourself."

I forced a smile, "I'm sorry. Should I leave?"

"I just want to make sure that you are safe mademoiselle."

I smiled for real this time, "Thank you good sir. Your efforts do not go unnoticed."

He bowed slightly to me, "Can I escort you to your place of residence?"

My smile dropped, "Um well I don't actually have a place to stay."

He looked slightly aghast. His words came out a little jumbled and unorganized.

"That's not okay. Would you care to accept a room in my house to stay in?"

Not sure whether I could trust the handsome young man stood before me I continued with caution, "Well if you are certain I wouldn't be in the way."

"Of course not my lady. I could hardly leave you on the street in times like these."

So I accepted his offer and he lead the way to a little cottage overlooking the beach. He showed me to what I could only guess was the guest room and went to draw a bath for me. I thanked him and tried my best to keep my uneasy thoughts at bay. After my bath I settled down under the warm covers of my bed and closed my eyes, giving an attempt at sleep which was quite possibly futile.

I was woken up the next morning by a soft knock on the door to my room. Equius', as I had learned was his name the night previously, voice drifted through the rough wood of the door.

"Mademoiselle, breakfast is ready if you would care to join me."

We ate breakfast and spent the rest of the morning talking as he went over paperwork for his job. The afternoon we spent in his sitting room much like the morning, talking of things that couldn't hurt us. We avoided the topic of the war raging around us altogether.

Our days went like this and before long I woke up one morning and realized I had stayed with the handsome man for a whole month. It didn't take much longer until I realized that I was beginning to fall for him. After about two months had gone by I decided I could trust him and I told him my story. I told him of my parents and of fleeing a war torn Germany. I told him of my trek across west Germany and east France. And I told him of my plans to get on a ship to America. And in return he told me a story quite similar to my own.

After that day we began to make plans for getting to America and I fell deeper and deeper in love with him. Five months had passed and we were packing our bags to leave for America. We had found a nice ship that would take us across the Atlantic for a small fee.

The day we left was bleak. Clouds filled the sky and a misty rain fell softly to the earth. We reached the port and boarded our ship. The captain showed us to our room and went back above deck. In less than an hour the boat was sailing out of the harbor.

"Feferi if we don't make it I just want you to know, this time I have spent with you has been the best months of my life. It's hard to believe you would fall for a lady you met on the beach in the late hours of the evening. What I'm trying to say is that I have fallen in love with you and I am so glad we met."

I felt my face heat up as he spoke, "I love you too, my Equius."

I fell into his arms as he reached out for me. We stood in the embrace not willing to let go of each other. When we finally did let go he gently took my hands.

"When we reach America, would you do me the honor of marrying me? I know this is sudden, but in these times when you find the right one you can never let them go."

"Yes! Oh god yes of course I will marry you!"

He smiled down at me and I smiled back at him, deliriously. He leaned down and kissed me softly.

"I love you."

"And I love you."

There's not much more to say about our story. We made it safely to the Charleston harbor in South Carolina. From there we rented a car and drove to Atlanta where I had originally planned to go and Equius agreed with me. We started paying rent on an apartment after Equius found a job as a mechanic in an auto repair shop. I started working in a diner as a waitress and about a year later we were happily married in a little church with our newfound friends and neighbors as our guests. Another two years passed and we were blessed with a little daughter that we named Hope. Hope had always been what had guided us. It is what got us out of our war torn past and into a new and bright future, together.

AN: Welp I'm not entirely sure what this is. I hope you enjoyed it despite that. Thank you for reading.
