When I arrive at Dr. X’s office, I notice how cold it is. He isn’t here, the Sentries told me that but I would be chatting with him via Glass. I’ve never used Glass before given that we aren’t allowed to have any electronics but this video-chatting program is truly a marvel from what I’ve been told by my professors. I sit on one of the plush red loveseats that he placed in front of his desk. Everything seemed abandoned and eerily quiet. The Sentry that escorted me was gone but I think about how much he talked to me. Almost as though we were more than strangers or acquaintances. It was uncomfortable given that he wasn’t keeping up the intimidating nature a Sentry should but what he told as he entered the code for Dr. X’s
Just know what you’re getting yourself into.
What did he mean by that? I knew exactly what I was doing. I thought through this entire situation countless times while staying up after curfew. I knew I was helping Dr. X and protecting my home. I was doing my duty and following orders. I was only interrogating the intruder…
Levii.
He was clever, I had to admit that. But not clever enough. For someone who was supposedly the biggest threat to us, I didn’t see him as that. His entire demeanor seemed off, but one thing I did know was that Levii was in fact the most infuriating person I’ve ever encountered. His smug grin and strange eye color were indescribable but I knew that they were part of the reason why I knew I’d hate him. I do hate him, I have to hate him and everything he stands for, whatever that may be.
I was so lost in my thoughts I hadn’t noticed the figure appear before me. He cleared his throat and my head shot up. Calculating grey eyes meet my amber ones.
“Rye.”
“Dr. X.” I answer to his holographic figure.
“Why do you sound so hoarse? Are you Ok dear?” he smirked at his question. I stared back at him with a blank expression.
“Ah, the girl knows when not to answer. Good…very good; but tell me this, what did you find out about our little…problem?”
I cleared my throat. “His name” I replied. There was a moment of silence before Dr. X’s taken aback face returned to his normal smug expression. He scratched a scar on his right jawline. It was a fresh one matching the old faded one he had on the left jawline.
“Sir-“
“Be quiet. I’m thinking”
It didn’t take a genius to realize he was aggravated. But why? Why would finding out the intruder’s name have such an impact on him? Either way I was still curious as to how he had gotten hurt in the Institute which was the safest place for him.
“Sir when did you get the uh-new mark?”
He stared coldly at me. At that moment he looked like a man with no remorse, a man that had nothing to live for…dangerous. In fact, extremely threatening. I looked quickly down at my lap not wanting to meet his eyes. His face was still locked on mine when he finally answered.
“Oh-this scar?” He pointed to it.“Yes-sir.”
“Well… Let’s see. Since none of the Sentries would dare do this to me and you and your peers wouldn’t either…who do you believe would DARE DO THIS?” His voice rising. It was obvious as to who I understood as I slowly rose my head.
