“What the hell Xander!”
“I’m sorry, OK!”
I was in a daze but the voices arguing with one another make my head hurt more than it already did. The throbbing at my brain was an alien pain that I hadn’t felt before, not even during training. What had happened? I allow darkness to engulf me as I fade back into unconsciousness.
“You realize this makes everything A LOT harder!” A shout wakes me.
“Yes brother I realize that. I’m sorry. Is that what you want to hear? Now what about our little friend over there?”
“Just forget about that for a minute. Why Xander? Why can’t you understand orders? I said don’t follow me I can get through this mission, solo. How the hell did you convince command anyways allow you to follow me?”
“Oh Levii, I told you I have my ways-“
I hear the same male voice arguing with itself but keep my eyes shut. The pain still lingers but not as worse as before. When I open my eyes slightly, I see two blurred figures standing 8 feet from where I am. Wait. Where am I? I suddenly think as I try to stand up but my head hammers with pain. I lay back down on the cot I’m laid on and let out a low groan. The voices stop talking and close my eyes before they turn their heads towards me
“Wait… did she wake up” one of the male figures whisper before I hear footsteps approach me. He bends down towards me and moves one hair out of my face. I let out a low growl and then grab the figure by the first thing I could. My fist seizes a chunk of his shirt and I pull him closer to my face. He looks back at me with an easy smile.
“Where. Am. I.” I articulate each word to make sure he understands that right now my temper is tethering on fine ice. I notice that the 2 figures have the same face…twins. Twin boys that look around my age, both wearing Sentry uniform with helmets kicked to the side of this room. Both have the face of the intruder Levii I met earlier. The one I have in my grasp doesn’t answer immediately when I tighten my grip but he gulps and his smirk falters the slightest bit. Good.
“Ha, so you have questions I assume?” he says surprisingly light without stammering. QUESTIONS? I think. Questions consisted of wondering how the Glass program worked, when my next group-training started or when I was going to get my next medication…No, although I had questions, I demanded answers.
“Levii. Which one would that be?” I ask the two.
The one still in my grasp chuckles and then replies “That would be the one over there looking pretty pissed.”
I glance around the twin whose name I don’t recall and see Levii. Standing there with a glare piercing daggers at me. I match his stare and we stay like this for approximately 2 minutes. When it starts to look as though he isn’t planning to back down at any moment, I look back at the twin I have and sigh in annoyance.
“Xander. That’s your name right?” I ask, remembering some of the conversation I had heard before I went unconscious.
“Um, uh…” the twin I presume to be Xander starts to fluster.
“Then I’m right. Well then Xander and Levii,” I start with a voice I don’t recognize as my own. “I don’t know how long I’ve been missing but I do know that if your value your lives at all, you would return me to my dorm and might as well turn yourselves in”. I knew the chances of them agreeing to my terms were slim to none but, I knew I should always have a proposition for any situation where I was in danger. It was a skill all of my peers and I had to master before we could further ourselves in exploring the field of hostage situations and overall any type of situation that we can find ourselves in when we become full agents. I understood I was threatening them, but I wasn’t Celina. I wasn’t one to forgive easily and take the sweet and kind route to get what I needed. That showed vulnerability, which could affect where I stood as an agent. I admit to being stubborn but I am loyal. I was not going to listen to them explain to me that I was fighting for the “wrong cause” and let them have control over me. It was the typical approach by rebels when they recruited I’ve been told by my professor and trainer Colton. Instead I had to still carry out my mission…somehow.
Levii scoffed. “It’s been 5 hours and no one has come around.” So we’re still in the Institute… that’s good.
“We just need to find the way out again and we’ll disappear. Just need the word and we take you with us.” Xander finishes for his brother. From who…
“As if we’d tell you.” Levii answers and I realize I had spoken aloud.
“Wasn’t planning on you telling me” I mutter as I let go of Xander. He stands there but then walks back to his brother and they continue discussing something in hushed tones. Levii then grumbles something but then walks to me and Xander leaves the room. What are they planning?
He stands a foot away from the cot where I’m tied around my waist and feet. I notice the difference between the two brothers then. While Levii’s right eye was blue and left was the strange mix of green and grey, Xander’s was in the opposite order.
“Guess the roles are reversed.” he states in a flat tone.
“Not for long. How’d you get out of your cell anyways?”
He sighs but then plainly replies “You’re not the only one who know how to fight.” We stay quiet for a moment before he continues. “Well, as much as I find you irritating on levels I honestly have yet to comprehend, I still have to find out everything about you and your kind.”
“I’d have to say the same.”
“Really, even though you are our captive now?”
“Yes. I’m already aware that I’m still inside my home so, no I am not your captive. But trust me, it won’t be long until they find me. I’m guessing that right now they realize I am gone.” He pretends to think about my words by tapping his chin dramatically.
“It could be a possibility.”
“More like a fact. A fact like how your brother left the room and Sentries are heading this way right now.”
Levii approached to where I was tied. He was smart enough to keep a distance from where I could reach out and grab him, but then crouched down to meet my eyes. He flipped his hair out of his face and slightly moved his face towards me.
“Now how would you know that Experiment.” he questioned in an eerily kept-together voice, spitting out ‘experiment’ as though it were poison. It was then I realized that he was interrogating me. The roles had reversed but now that I knew, I refused to allow them to be for too long.
“Not that it matters to you but we experiments have trackers implanted in us.”
I was bluffing but my face gave away no hint of it. Honestly, I didn’t know if we did or not but I refused for him to know that. None of the girls here had ever left before it was time to graduate nor venture outside of the Academy sector of the Institute. If we had a tracker of some sort surely I would’ve known or realized at some point. With this thought, I hoped inside of my head that Sentries knew where I was…
“Well, I was missing the company of those mute soldiers or Sentries or whatever you call them who can’t seem to take a punc-”
He never was able to finish his thought before the door slid open. A wave of cold air made me shiver. We both turned our heads expecting Xander to walk through the doorway. But he didn't, and the small room began to pervade with the disinfectant odor of the Institute. Then, the room filled with Sentries that I may have not heard, if I hadn't been waiting for them when I realized the minute Xander wasn't at the doorway. The 15 of them and the 2 of us stood there in silence before chaos exploded.
