My first reaction is to knock down the door that divides me from them. This time I couldn’t allow for them to get away. No, not a second time, I refuse for that to happen. How did I find myself in these situations where I was crossing the thin line between helpless and foolish actions. It was probably the day I met him, but I dismiss the thought as quickly as it had came. As I’m about to turn back to the entrance, a sleek black car hovers and pulls up in front of me. Taking two steps back as 3 men in black suits exit the vehicle, I see a familiar wisp of grey hair inside, and my shoulders tense. Dr. X can’t find out the truth about how the events had unfolded tonight. Taking a deep breath I meet his gaze from inside the car and I suckeed into a memory, I had long forgotten about.
I was fidgeting in a seat outside of a room I had never entered. I close my eyes and tell myself, You’ll be fine Rye. Its just a...a. checkup? Is that the word they used before the Sentries escorted me here? I really didn’t know. Suddenly, I felt a large hand placed on my shoulder. I look up and meet a Sentries warm brown eyes. They were accepting back then, they knew we tried our hardest in our studies. Little did I know it was all an act.
The scene skips ahead and now I’m laying down on a cold metal table. Turning my head Dr. X enters-with Dr. Sky and 4 other men and women in lab coats.
“Rye?” Dr. X says from the inside of the car.
“Yes sir?” I reply clearly and attend, but my mind is a million miles away. I didn’t know Dr. Sky until I met her on the jet, so how did I meet her when I was younger? I could’ve been at least 9 or 10 in that memory and she should've been recognizable to me if I had met her then.
Dr. X breaks away from the group of strangers in lab coats. He gives me a small smile and asks “How are you dear?” I open my mouth to answer but he cuts me off, “I know you’ve felt little aches in your back?” I nod. “Well, we are here to help fix that up. Now can you turn over onto your stomach.” he instructs as the group of strangers each take a spot around the table. I close my eyes as the now-familiar ache returns. It strings and then feels like a burn. Then the pressure comes, feeling as though I’m being repeatedly punched in the same spot over and over. I bite down hard on my lip but at the last second I raise my head and see them preparing a syringe with a long needle. I let out a small whimper and Dr. Sky sees me. Walking over, I notice her face looks more innocent and younger. Her voice, was even more genuine as she asks “Are you ok?” I don’t respond but she leans closer and whispers, “I know you aren't going to remember this for quite awhile but because of that, you're going to need to be strong. Build barriers around yourself. Don’t cry, but know that as the pain goes away, so will this. I really hope I never have to see you again here or affiliated with this place. I’d become a monster by then. Hopefully... they are taken before you come of age.” Her words were nearly incoherent but before I could ask what she had meant, someone approaches me with the syringe filled with a blue liquid-
“So I heard the news- the President was shot. Rye. That wasn’t part of the mission and although I don’t agree with his policies I was quite upset at the news, as the rest of the nation. That is, until i heard that the Chancellor had been supposedly a part of the attempt given that he left just before the tragedy occurred. You did complete your mission correct?” Dr. X questions, snapping me out of my trance. At a lost, I nod and I’m ushered into the car. Only 1 man enters with Dr.X and I. The other two whisper to X and then walk towards the building I had just existed. I wonder what they are planning to do there. Even as Dr.Sky's warning continues to ring in my head I try to ignore it and stare out the car window as it begins begins to drive off.
I guess it’s time to go back…, I tell myself. Holograms on the passing skyscrapers all reporting coverage of what had occurred at the gala. We ride in silence and pull up to the hotel that we stayed the night before. As I'm taken inside, I finally catch a glimpse of what it was named, Et Speluncam. It was a strange name, clearly latin but I couldn’t decipher what it meant. I’d never heard of it before but I shrugged it off as we entered.
