Percy shuffled through several campers, frantically looking for Annabeth. It was already five minutes before the New Year and he was dying to spend the last moments of it with her. Everyone was at the fireworks beach, waiting for the clock to strike twelve. It was quite hectic, since there was barely enough space for everybody to settle down but Percy didn't care. He just wanted to find his girlfriend. After realizing she wasn't at the beach, he headed towards the canoe lake, where there might be a chance she was there.
True enough, when he reached the canoe lake, Annabeth was standing at the edge of it, her back faced to him. His heart fluttered at the sight of her. "I thought you'd be here." He started.
Annabeth turned around, a big smile plastered onto her face. "Percy." She said. His name felt so precious on her tongue, it almost made him weak in the knees. "About time you came."
"Why didn't you tell me you were here?" He asked, walking towards her. He could barely see her face, but he knew those stormy grey eyes and distracted look, as if she were thinking of a million things at once. Her curly golden blonde hair looked almost white under the moonlight. Percy thought she never looked more beautiful.
"I thought you were smart enough to figure it out yourself." Said Annabeth. "You know, since we had the best underwater kiss of all time here."
At that, Percy laughed. He stood close to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He leaned in and took in the smell of her shampooed hair and perfume, almost lulling his senses. "My brain is full of kelp, remember?"
Two minutes to midnight.
Annabeth kissed the tip of his nose. "It so is."
Percy smirked. "The rest are going to think we did it again." He said.
"What?"
Percy shook his head, suddenly embarrassed to say it.
"Tell me, seaweed brain." Annabeth urged.
"Remember that time we fell asleep in the Argo II by accident? And everyone thought we –"
Annabeth's cheeks turned crimson red. "Right." She said. "Well, I don't care what they think anymore."
Percy smiled. One minute left to New Year's Day. Annabeth wrapped her hands around his neck. "I love you, Percy." She whispered.
"I love you too, wise girl." He replied. "Happy New Year." He leaned down and pressed his lips against Annabeth's. In the distance, they could hear the crowd counting down.
THREE.
TWO.
ONE.
"Happy New Year!" the crowd screamed as fireworks shot in the night sky, illuminating the camp with colours. Even after seconds passed and it was already a new day, Percy and Annabeth kept their lips locked. It was pretty much the best way to have kicked start the New Year.
