Sophia Carter lay on her back on the cold cement floor.

She was surrounded by grey. It was on the walls, the floor, even the ceiling. The colour had begun to drive her mad. Day after day it was all she saw. She was beginning to think that it would consume her if she looked at it any longer.

But, all she had was time.

Time to look at the cold grey walls. Time to lie on the cold grey floors. Time to become grey like the world around her.

Time to go insane.

She could feel it rising in her. The colour was taking over her, dampening her spirits and turning her into someone she wasn't. Once, she was a bright, colourful person who loved to laugh and smile and infect other people with her happiness. Now, she was lucky if she managed a smirk on a good day. A laugh was just completely out of the picture.

Gone were the days of happy Sophia Carter.

As she lay on her back, arms stretched out beside her, she stared out the small window perched at the top of one of the grey walls. Stars glimmered beautifully against a pitch black landscape. Moonlight filtered in through the open window, cast a beam of golden light across her pant clad legs. If Sophia stood up and peered out of that window, she would be able to see planet earth. She would be able to see it spinning slowly, its continents appearing and disappearing as it turned gracefully on its axis.

Sophia had always thought it was beautiful. When she'd first been locked inside the cold grey room, she'd stared at it for hours, clinging to it as if it were her lifeline. She'd imagined what it had been like down there when humans inhabited it. She wondered what it was like to breathe in fresh air, to walk across real grass, to brush a hand against the trunk of a tree. All of these things would have seemed trivial once, maybe even taken for granted, but now, people could only imagine or read about it in books.

It had been 97 years since anyone had been on the ground. A nuclear war had sent everyone packing, fleeing to the sky in hopes of survival. Instead, they ended up orbiting the planet in a spaceship called the Ark. At one point in time, the Arc had joined together with the 11 other space ships to ensure the human race lived on. But as resources were depleted, the population of the Ark decreased and strict laws were enforced.

Hence why Sophia was imprisoned in her cell of grey.

The only problem, though, was that she didn't do it.

Sure, everyone ever who got caught doing something wrong says they didn't do it. But in this case, Sophia wasn't lying. Three years ago, Sophia had been wandering the halls of the ark looking for her best friend, Luca. She'd told Sophia that she was going with some friends to score extra rations. Sophia had scoffed and told her that she would get caught, that it would absolutely mean imprisonment. But, she didn't listen. She simply told Sophia that she would be back later, that she'd even try and get some for her too.

But, when later came around, there was no sign of Luca. So, naturally, Sophia had gotten worried and went to see if she could find her, make sure she was okay. For a good five minutes, she wondered the corridors, her regulation boots, ratty and well worn, clunking loudly against the steel floors. Finally, she heard a bunch of loud whispering carrying through a door to her right. Without thinking, she'd pushed the door open and came face to face with her best friend.

Whilst Luca hadn't exactly lied to Sophia about what she was doing, she hadn't exactly been truthful either. In one of the small blonde's hands was a large handful of rations. In the other was a gun. Sophia's eyes had widened and she'd looked at her friend in confusion. "Sophia? What are you doing here?" Sophia hadn't been able to answer her. She'd just stared at her, mouth open wide, sucking in air like a goldfish.
