I hovered over them, powering my mind stone. I blasted the energy beam, drawing a line in front of them to prevent them from escaping. They stopped in their tracks, looking up to identify the source of the beam.
I briefly studied the group. To my dismay, Wanda was among them, flanking Captain America with Hawkeye and the Falcon. I noticed a few new faces; I recognised the Winter Soldier, but there was another enhanced, clad in red and black whom I had never seen before.
"Captain Rogers." I declared, my voice echoing around the space. "I know that you believe what you're doing is right. But for the collective good, you must surrender now."
The others joined me by my side. Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow, the King of Wakanda, and a boy in a red body suit whom I assumed was Parker from the jet. They stood resolute, staring the other side down.
I looked over them all, both our side and theirs, yet I did not see enemies and allies. All I saw were metallic armours, well-designed rubber suits, and a vibranium shield enclosing the vulnerable bodies of people. People who could bleed. People who could die.
I realised immediately that I possessed an unfair advantage in this battle of men. With my missile-proof skin and indestructibility, I was the outsider, and did not belong in a war in which the extent of my powers could truly harm a friend. However I had a duty to adhere to. I just needed to make sure I was careful.
The two sides approached each other, accelerating to a run. To my utter surprise, Wanda levitated, and the fiery tornadoes powered her forward. I hadn't taught her lateral movement. She'd been practising.
"They-they're not stopping" Parker exclaimed nervously through the radio.
"Neither are we." Mr. Stark instructed. Each one of us chose an opponent to run towards, and I decided to concentrate on the Falcon.
I flew towards him, preparing to tackle. Before I could reach him however, an electric arrow pierced me from the ground, disabling my functions.
I fell to the ground, cracking the concrete underneath me.
...
A fellow comrade, the King of Wakanda, stood in the way of a bus veering at him at a high speed. I flew in front of him to block the blow, and the extreme impact caused the bus to shatter against my hardened body.
...
The giant man loomed over us, each of his steps shaking the ground. I flew to his level, and canon-balled myself into his chest, causing him to lean over precariously.
...
Captain America and the Winter Solider ran towards the jet, while the giant man lumbered around, swatting at the Spider-Man and the Iron suits as if they were flies. I materialised through him, following the two figures with my eyes.
"Something just flew in me" the giant man panicked, grappling at his chest.
A tall shot tower stood by the entrance. I powered the mind stone, aiming at the base. The energy beam crackled and spat against the cement, and the tower crumbled sideways to block the entrance.
Suddenly, a red misty net appeared, its tendrils wrapping around the bricks to hold it in place. The red trail lead from Wanda on the ground, craning under the immense weight of the rocks. Captain America and the Winter Soldier continued running, almost at the gates.
War Machine appeared, blasting sonic waves at Wanda's crude direction. She shrieked in agony, clutching at her ears to stop the pain. The mist dissolved in the wind, and the rocks fell... but it was too late. The Captain and the Soldier were gone.
Instinct forced me to turn around to her. She was curled in a foetus position, her fingers entwined in her hair. It takes a few moments, but I knew that the pain from sonic waves eventually dissipates.
So what was logical in this scenario was to go after Captain Rogers and the Soldier. Materialise through the rocks perhaps, or blast a hole through them so the others could get through. Maybe assist my allies in their fight, or wait until Captain's jet takes off so I could bring it down with my energy beam.
Instead, I descended, kneeling by her side. I brushed the strands of hair away from her face, and pulled her to my lap. Her eyelids fluttered open at the contact, and her eyes found mine as if they were guided by a magnet.
The battle, my duty, the Accords, things that require priority, became totally irrelevant when she looked at me.
"I'm sorry." I said quietly.
"Me too." She replied, and I felt peaceful bliss.
Captain Roger's jet took off in a roaring blaze, yet it made no difference to me. Wanda watched the jet fly, and her face lit up with the hopeful smile of success. The two Iron suits took off after it, with Sam tailing them.
Wanda suddenly remembered me and my ideals, and stared at me as if wondering why I wasn't tailing the jet like the others. I had no answer to that.
"Vision I got a bandit on my six." Rhodey's voice crackled into my ear. "Vision, you copy? Target's a thruster, turn him into a glider"
I aimed. And I missed.
I flew as fast as I could, but I was far too late. War Machine crashed into the ground, the sound a disturbing boom of metal on earth.
