It was almost midnight and Smoke was playing the last song of the evening. Such a slow, sweet melody Sam could almost fall asleep if she wasn’t in the school gym. When the song ended the band said their thanks and left the stage, giving once again the microphone to the principle.
“Okay people that was it. I hope you had a wonderful evening, but now it’s time to go.” As he said this all the lights came on and the magic of the night was gone. “I will see you all back on Monday,” the principle added, like that was something to look forward to.
Sam and her friends slowly made their way outside, being careful the mass didn’t stamp them.
“Where are Zack and Cherise?” Sam noticed she hadn’t seen them in a while and with all those people here there was no way she could spot them out. She nudged Timo, waiting for an answer. He was nearly falling asleep standing up, so tired from dancing all night. His shirt was sticking half out of his pant, he had lost his gloves and he couldn’t find the sunglasses on top of his head. That all without being drunk. Sam was still waiting for an answer, but Timo was kind of gone.
“They left like five minutes ago,” Kevin told her. He had his arm under Timo’s shoulder, half dragging him outside.
“Well if you could keep your eyes like five seconds away from Ace, you would have noticed,” Timo teased her. He kept wiggling his eyebrows at Sam, totally creeping around. She finally got to tell Timo about Ace asking her out and he wouldn’t shut up about it.
Finally they made it outside in the cold fresh air. Sam felt chilly from the sudden change in temperature, hugging herself to warm up. As they made their way back to Kevin’s car, Timo kept singing the last song of the night. For the record Timo absolutely can’t sing. Sam had heard dogs howl better than his musical talent. Kevin tried to make him shut up without letting him fall, but well failed. Timo smacked down on the grass, face first.
“Ow.” Was his reaction and he just stayed on the ground. The boy was so confused it had her cracking up. “How did I get here?” Timo looked up at them, his eyes all big and he was even pouting. He looked like a five year old, sitting with his legs wide open and looking around in bewilderment. Kevin just shook his head and grabbed his arm to pull him back upright. Luckily Timo cooperated and when they started walking again, Sam noticed there were pretty much the last ones there.
“Sam, wait!” She heard a boy shout. Not again. If she had to deal with yet another stalker guy, somebody was going to get hurt.
Timo had heard the shouting as well and he swirled around dragging Kevin with him. They almost fell back onto the ground, but Kevin managed to hold them both up. “Ooh it’s Ace,” Timo chirped. “Don’t you like Ace, Sam? He’s so sweet and dreamy and charming and sweet…” He was off in lala-land. Sam patted his shoulder in reassurance.
“Hey,” Ace said, trying to catch his breath.
“Hi!” Timo screamed at him. He was even waving his hand in front of Ace’s face, nearly scaring the guy to death. By now Kevin really had seen enough and dragged Timo away to his car, after Ace said he would drive Sam home.
Now that Timo was gone and the school was deserted, everything seemed so quiet. Sam hated such silences. Luckily Ace wasn’t all that into silence either. “So you had fun?”
