“Is she okay?” She heard someone say from far away. Why was it so dark in here?
“Sam can you hear me?” She heard closer, but it still sounded like a whisper. What was going on? Yes, she wanted to answer, but she couldn’t make a sound. Panic started to overtake her body. Why couldn’t she do anything? She tried to open her eyes, but closed them back immediately against the bright light.
“I think I saw her eyes move.” This time the voice was clear. Oh man, her head was hurting. Again she tried to open her eyes and this time it went a little better. The light was still very bright, but she squinted her eyes and saw all these bodies standing over her.
“Sam can you hear me,” she heard from her left. Turning her head very slowly, she saw Timo sitting beside her.
“Timo?” she was so confused. Why was she lying down on the floor? And Cherise who stood behind Timo, was silently crying. What in the world was going on?
“How many fingers am I holding up?” someone said from her other side. She turned around and saw some fingers shoved in her face.
“Two,” she hesitated and saw the fingers pulled back.
“That’s good,” the guy smiled at her. Wait this guy was Ace Miller. From Smoke. It started to come back to her. She fainted in front of everyone. Closing her eyes in embarrassment, brought on another round of panicked voices around her.
“Sam!” Cherise screamed, thinking her friend fainted again. “Stay awake.”
“I am awake,” she mumbled. Oh God. She couldn’t believe she really fainted. Earlier in the week she was joking about her friends fainting and now she made a complete fool of herself. Where is that hole, so it could swallow her. Anywhere but here, where everyone was just staring at her, like she was some sort of extinct species. It was not like she was the first girl that ever fainted in front of Smoke. At least that’s what she tried to convince herself.
“Can you sit up?” Timo put his hand on her arm to help her. She tried to get up, but as soon as she did the world started spinning.
“Easy there,” Ace said from her right. Both Timo and him helped her in upright position. She opened her eyes again and Clarissa held a glass of water out to her. Cherise was still sniffling in Van’s arms. Sam gladly took the water, took a couple of big gulps and gave the glass back.
“Ready to stand up?” Ace asked her. He looked so concerned for her. Still the sweet guy she knew from high school. With his face so close to hers, she could easily see all the details. Like how the outer ring of his eyes were a shade darker blue, than the rest. How perfectly arched his eyebrows were, even though they were slightly covered by his brown hair. And his lips. The lower a bit fuller than the upper. Oh how she would bet he was a great kisser. To feel those lips on hers.
“Sam?” It was more she saw his lips move, than actually heard what he said.
“Yeah,” she felt her cheeks turn red. And the embarrassment just kept on continuing. Everyone must have seen her staring at him. Slowly she got up, again with the help of Timo and Ace. Standing up, they were all still staring at her. She hated the attention, all those eyes on her.
“I’m okay,” she assured them.
“You need anything?” Clarissa asked her. “Some more water? Something to eat?”
“No, I’m fine. Really,” she tried to convince them.
“You know,” Brian told her. “If you wanted my attention, you could have just asked for it. No need to faint.” His comment broke the tension in the room and a couple of people chuckled. Sam was glad for the distraction and gave him a small smile in gratitude. He just winked at her.
