"Hi."
"T-O-M-O-S, yes it is a name."
"No my parents were not drunk when they named me. It's Welsh."
"I am not a 'sheep shagger'."
"What is so wrong with my nationality?"
"I'm sorry we just are better at rugby than you."
And with that comment, they began again.
Hi, I'm Tomos Ligouri. I am an only child and I live in Woking with my 'famous' parents. When my grandparents were young, alive, there was a popular website called YouTube. All four of my grandparents made videos on YouTube. It sounds cool. I think if it was around now, I'd do it. So anyway, my grandparents were all very famous due to their videos that they made on this platform so when my parents were young they were pretty well known already. My mum had always wanted to keep up this ambition of making content for others to enjoy but she never managed and my dad wasn't even bothered. He had his fancy-ass job to keep up.
My dad is another reason they bully me. They literally pick ot everything about me: I'm a quarter Welsh, I wear glasses, I'm not an aggressive alcoholic with a single brain cell that hardly works at age 14, my sexuality, any information they can get hold of. The say my dad is too feminine which is ridiculous. They think that because my father was adopted, took my mum's surname and has a high up job at my school that he is a reason I should be picked on. My dad being an assistant principal at my school doesn't help though. You think it would be cool and you could get people in trouble and avoid things but no. He makes me go to his stupid meetings and uses me as an example. Mr big boss man in his suit who gives his own son a certificate every year for having 100% attendance only because he doesn't allow his son any time off school.
I don't hate my dad. He's a good person I just find him a bit irritating sometimes. I always wonder how life would be if I lived with my auntie and uncle.
I love my auntie and uncle. My auntie is twins with my mum and she's really cool. She was born with cerebral palsy and my grandparents were told she'd probably be in a wheelchair all her life but then she had loads of therapy and operations and now she can almost walk as if she never had it. Then she became a scientist, which is really cool, and met uncle Gus. He fell in love with her immediately and they live together with their two dogs, Rhianwen and Ciao. Auntie Haf had been advised not to have children because the doctors predicted that she wouldn't survive childbirth. My mum has since told me that she was really upset when she found out so her and Gus got the dogs, to feel like a parent to something. I feel like I go and stay a lot too because it makes auntie Haf feel just a little bit more like a mother. We do fun science experiments when I go to stay and once she even took me to her lab and we used a Bunsen burner and all her other cool equipment. I love going to stay at auntie Haf's house because her and uncle Gus are both interested in science like me and I love playing with the dogs. When I'm with Haf and Gus I feel like I belong. I never really feel that anywhere else. Definitely not at school. I think about school as little as possible. I spend most lunchtimes in my dad's office in silence while he works. He doesn't know how bad it really is. He doesn't know I get beaten up all the time. I told uncle Gus once but I asked him not to tell anyone. I know that he told auntie Haf but I don't think anyone else knows. I tell them about it but I usually spare them the details. I don't even want to repeat some of the things they to me. I can handle the stupid names like "faggot" and "sheep shagger". It's just when it gets more personal is the problem. Things like "why do you aspire to a cripple?" and "wait until PE". Oh god PE. I never knew a simple combination of letters could strike so much fear in my heart.
Physical education. Literal death.
The teachers didn't care anymore so we were allowed to choose what sport we played. This meant that I was pressured into playing rugby. I should enjoy rugby, it's my culture. I used to play it with my family which I enjoyed. Now, however, was being pushed face first into the mud by people who spent all their free time doing drugs, getting drunk, having sex or building their muscles. I think they'd been doing the last option a lot lately. At the end of the lesson I was cold, tired, muddy, bruised and bleeding but I got changed and walked home as fast as I could because it was the weekend and I was going to stay with Hafi, as my mum calls her, and Gus. Hafi had told me that she had a surprise for me so I wanted to be as quick as I could. I wanted as much time as possible at Hafi and Gus' house because the time seemed to pass so fast when I was there.
I'm so glad I did rush because it was the best thing ever. I got home, had a quick shower, got my mum to try to patch up my bleeding face a bit and jumped in the car to go to Hafi's house. When we got there she took me in and showed me a large shiny present in the middle of the room and told me it was for me. I was unsure of what this gift was and I wasn't expecting anything because it was nowhere near my birthday and over a month before Christmas. I carefully peeled off the shiny gold wrapping as she stood in the doorway with Gus, watching for my reaction. As soon as I could tell what it was I looked up, speechless. I stayed silent for a moment before saying "you got me my own chemistry kit?"
"I did"
"Oh my god auntie Haf thank you so much! But these are so expensive why did you get me one?"
"We got offered then at the lab and I knew just who wanted one" she smiled back at me.
"Thank you so much auntie Haf. I love it so much!"
"You are very welcome my dear."
Anyone who says my auntie Haf isn't the best person in the world is definitely wrong.
