(Y/N) lay on top of her father. His stomach was aglow, leaving (Y/N) to endure the very familiar heat. Her mind was racing, thinking about what she had seen and thought while outside. Finding the courage to speak out to Smaug, she cleared her throat and spoke.
'Why did you destroy Dale?'
Smaug let out a hum before responding.
'If I hadn't, the men could have sided with the dwarves and would have attacked us. If they found you, they would have killed you instantly. You were the size of an elf had no means of defense'
(Y/N) sat up and looked him in the eye.
'Why did we come here?'The room was silent for a while.
'The hoard. I had heard rumors and had to come here before anyone else got to it first'
A scowl appeared on (Y/N)'s face.
'Do you even care about anyone else?'
A growl emitted from Smaug. He craned his neck so that he was eye level to (Y/N).'What do you think? By all means, I could have left you back at the North, alone and exposed. But I took you with me wherever I went. I fed you and kept you warm. When your mother died, I could have left you as an egg but I had mercy on you and cared for you myself!'
(Y/N) stood and looked at Smaug with a blank expression. She had never thought about her mother. Back at the North, she'd seen plenty of dragonesses caring for their young but she never wondered why she didn't have one. She was angry but curious.
'My mother died?'
Smaug loudly exhaled. He hadn't meant to bring this up.
'Yes'
'What was she like?'
'A weak cold-drake who always seemed to be in distress. Pretty pathetic actually, but I admit that she was headstrong'
'How did she die?'
'Mating competition. It can be a violent time where many weaker dragons may lose their lives. Luckily it won't happen again for the next few hundred years'
(Y/N) shifted and plopped down onto the hoard. She curled up and buried her face into her lap. Smaug curled his tail around her current tiny form and sighed. At least she wasn't orphaned. There have been drakelings who were totally alone. No mother or father to protect them. Its parents either died or abandoned it. Whether the baby was a fire-drake or cold-drake, it wouldn't survive by itself. Dragons only cared about their own, so no one would adopt it.
(Y/N) eventually calmed down. She turned her head around and glanced up at Smaug. He looked down at her with the same expression. The juvenile sighed and stood up.
'I'm sorry. I just felt sympathy for the men and dwarves'
Smaug lowered his head to her level.
'Sometimes, you just have to do what's best for you'
