For me this is the best time of the year. The final day of school before summer starts. Summer is my absolute favourite season. Hanging out with friends, going to the beach, spending a whole day at the pool, things like that scream summer. As I’m about to start drooling over thinking about all the different kinds of ice cream I could be consuming right now my best friend Reina starts poking me,
“Jena, Jena, Jena, JENA!”,
“Oh my God, what Reina?!”,
“Just think, in approximately…,” she looks intently at her watch and I roll my eyes, “Five point two-five minutes, we will have finished year nine and it will be summer, and we can go to the pool and the beach and oh my God. I think I’m too excited!” Reina finishes, breathing heavily,
“I think so too. So are you coming to my house after school so we can swim?”
“Uh, sorry I can’t,” she replies,
“Why not?!”
“Mum’s roping both me and my brother into going to some family get-together thingy,”
“Oh… Family things are the worst,”
“I know right!” I grab my phone out of my pocket and check the time, “One minute to go Reina.” Reina nods at me, her eyes wide with excitement. When there is ten seconds to go the whole class starts counting down,
“TEN, NINE, EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX, FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE!!” And that’s when the chaos begins. Reina and I are making our way out of the classroom when everyone else barges though the doorway and we are shoved out of the way.
When we finally get out of the smelly crowd of teenagers that is our entire school population, we make our way up the street,
“Is your mum picking you up?” I asked Reina,
“Yeah, she’s waiting in Queen Street,” she says and points in the general vicinity of the street.
When we were parting ways I pull Reina in for a hug and said,
“I’ll call you and arrange a catch up okay?” Reina nodded. I wait until she had gotten into the car and her mum had driven off before I continued walking home.
When I got home I took my bag off my back and dragged it behind me as I staggered up to the breakfast bar. Stuck to the bar was a pink sticky note and straight away I knew it was going to be a note from mum saying she is out doing errands or something, but I read it anyway:
Dear Jena,
Gone out for a coffee with friends. Please fill out the form on your desk for me.
Love you, Mum xoxo.
I screw up the note and chuck it in the bin. I grab my bag and drag it to my room and throw it onto my bed. I grab the form from my desk along with a pen and jump onto my bed, thinking about how much fun Reina and I are going to have over the summer. But then I look at the heading for the first time: Musical Theatre Summer Camp.
A.N. This chapter is dedicated to @atasteofperfection because I really loved her Katy Perry fanfiction which you should definately check out. Even though this has nothing to do with Katy Perry!! When I started on Wattpad it was the first story I read so thank you!!
