Chapter 7 - Questions and Equation

"Luke!" I exclaimed. I didn't expect to find him here so early in the morning, or to meet him outside school at all. Luke was standing in front of me in his casual clothes, consisting of a dark blue t-shirt with black jeans.

Luke and I sidestepped nearer to the trees lining the sidewalk so we won't block the way and sat down on a bench. "Where are you going?" I asked him out of pure curiosity. I recalled him saying he wasn't an early riser during weekends, even though the time now wasn't that early anymore.

He seemed to hesitate to answer, his eyes turned to the right as if searching for the right word to say. "Err... Around," he shortly answered. I realized he didn't want to answer nor ask back, so I thought it might be too private considering we had only known each other for a week. I didn't push further and silence started filling in.

"Busy?" Luke broke the silence and I shook my head. He stood up all of a sudden, stretching his hand towards me. "Let's have some fun then!" His lips curved upward, waiting for me to take his hand. Gladly I took it and stood up as well, following him.

That day, we went around to several shops. Knowing that I didn't bring any money "for some reason", Luke treated me to eat a "decent breakfast", as what he called it.

I could see how he was brought up by his family by his table manners. Though we didn't try anything new, the way he ate was something that I'd seen on formal dinner scenes in movies even though we were eating pancakes with syrup.

I found that Luke loved strawberry. He chose strawberry milkshake as his drink and strawberry syrup for his pancakes and when he saw the syrup flowing down the mountain of pancakes, his eyes were shining, he was almost drooling.

Contrary to the other stores and restaurants around here, Luke brought me to this small café that sold mostly pancakes and waffles.

I sliced the pancake on my plate, dribbled with chocolate syrup. "You live around here?" I asked, putting in a sliced piece of pancake into my mouth.

All of a sudden his face turned into an expression of worry, "Erm, yeah, eh, not really," he shrugged. I could see his eyes darting around.

I just replied with a nod. Luke was acting weird. He seemed like he was hiding something. Once again, considering that I’d only known him for awhile, I didn't push the subject.

"I feel like I forgot something," I told Luke, changing the topic. I really did feel that there was something that I had forgotten.

He opened his mouth, ready to answer, but his phone rang, playing a song that I believe I’d heard somewhere. "Wait a minute," he eyed me.

I continued eating my pancake and drank my tea as I silently listened to his conversation with someone on his the other line.

He ended the phone call and before I could ask, he said, "That was my 3rd sister, Milly. She seems to be pissed that I am not home."
