Chapter 9 - The Body Language

Edited by Lostindreamz, the awesome editor woohoo!

Three days passed since the day I’d realised Luke might possibly be The One. It felt weird to think that I had actually befriended the target, if he actually was, that is. It was like, a lion being friends with a zebra.

Thefollowing days, I felt a bit of guilt and worry filling my chest. If Luke was actually The One, what would he do if he found out I wasn't actually Robin Apple? That instead, I was Robin Fletcher, the girl from a run-down house in a smaller city and not the Robin who lived on a private island or owned expensive leather bags.

And, did The One know he was, you know, a target for a bizarre game like this? I certainly would want to know if I was to be The One. I, even as a participant, felt that their privacy was a bit invaded.

I walked down the hallway with my mind clouded with the thoughts. I had been thinking more and more lately. I pushed the books into my locker and took out my tumbler and lunch box, which was now in the pattern of apple, and yes, Apple bought that.

Today was rather special. Kate was going to join me and Luke for lunch in the flower garden. They'd never really met before, except I did mention their names to each other. I saw Kate walk towards me from the corner my eyes with her warm smile. If Luke's smile was like a baby's smile, hers surely looked like a mom's smile. Oh, baby and mom. That matched.

"Hey, Kate," I greeted her first, my free hand closing my locker hard. "How was the recital?"

Her smile grew wider;hinting her excitement. On our way to the flower garden, which was actually pretty far, she told me a detailed explanation of what was happening. She had a big ballet show where she got a pretty important part. She had spent her time practicing and I believed it was a success even without her telling me.

We directly headed to the bench I usually sat on with Luke. I could already see his figure from afar. I tapped on his shoulder, calling his attention. He turned his head like an owl, a wide grin on his face. "Welcome!" he shouted.

Oh, isn't that the usual Luke?

I replied with a smile, introducing him to Kate who shyly stood behind me.

"You must be Kate Haynes," Luke stated, shaking her hand. Kate's skin looked paler in his grip, compared to Luke who was a bit tanner. They both seemed like they knew each other, but never actually had had a proper conversation.

Soon enough, they started talking about some business corporation stuff which included some deal with both their companies and other things I certainly didn't understand. I felt the weird vibe that both of them weren't comfortable with each other yet. That's understandable, I guess.

Luke was cheerful, but he didn't talk while eating like how he usually did with me. While Kate was no different, she didn't even touch her food yet. Luke would put his spoon down, and then talk, and when it was Kate's turn; he would take a bite while nodding in understanding or agreeing. Their backs were kept straight and eye contact was rather less. I ate my food observing both of them conversing. I didn't really like how they kept themselves composed as if they were total strangers.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. So far I only had Apple, Luke and Kate's number, so if it wasn't Luke or Kate, it must be Apple. Great progress, I know. I unlocked the phone to see a preview of his message on the screen.

-You might want to know more about Luke, it said.

I glanced over at the two awkward figures in front of me, still trying to find something interesting to talk about.
