Chapter 10 - Heartbeats and Nervousness

"-bin, Robin... Miss Robin Apple!" The voice rose until it surprised me, causing me to snap my head towards the direction of the voice immediately.

"Y-Yes?" I tried to answer as calmly as possible. Her expression showed displeasure and irritation. She let out a sigh, her eyebrows furrowed. "You better listen next time, Miss," she warned me.

I gave her a small nod; I could feel all the eyes of my classmates on me. I didn’t really like being the centre of attention.

"Well, let's forget about that. I would like to inform you about a good news, Miss Robin." She walked around the table, coming closer to me. "You are selected as one of our school's representatives for a local maths Olympiad."

I nodded, yet to process everything she said. Oh, a maths Olympiad, sounds very interesting.

"What?" I turned my head to face her, not being able to hide my surprise after realising what she had said.

"Don't tell me you didn't listen, again," she raised her eyebrows.

"Oh, no, no. I meant, I am... going for a maths Olympiad?" I confirmed. Did I hear it right? I had never been active in any events in my old school, let alone something like this. I did like math, but I didn’t think that I was good enough to be considered as a participant of something like a maths Olympiad.

"Yes," she replied, this time with a smile instead. "You did a very good job, Miss Robin. I was impressed by the effort you put into your work. I could see how many times you rubbed your answer and tried it all over again."

I was stunned by her answer. That was the first time a teacher had ever said something like that to me. I wasn’t a student that attracted the teacher’s attention, usually. "Thanks," I returned her smile, feeling appreciated. Soon, the sound of claps erupted. Eight pairs of hands congratulated me. It felt as if I was fitting in without even trying, that I was appreciated and could finally feel proud of myself.

Well, being in this school isn't so bad. Turned out I could do better than I thought I could.

The day was still early and it was a Saturday. When I opened my door I could see Apple preparing breakfast for both of us. Apple wished me a good morning while preparing what looked like a very delicious sandwich.

"That looks really good," I praised him. Apple always made good food. I took one of the sandwiches, and put it into my mouth. Soon, the taste filled my mouth, how delicious.
"Hey, I'm not done making them!" Apple half-chuckled, taking the half bitten sandwich out of my hand and placed it back onto the plate. I frowned, he should have let me finish that one, it ruined the whole beautiful appearance of the plate full of untouched white breads with green lettuce, red tomatoes, and yellow sliced cheese. Not to mention that delicious ham.

"Can we finish this all?" I asked him sceptically. Seemed like he was engrossed in making all those.

"Oops. Seems like I made a lot, might as well share with someone," Apple said as he untied his apron. I looked at the beautiful pile of sandwiches, taking my unfinished one when he wasn’t looking when an idea popped in my head.

I tip toed, trying to reach the upper cabinet where Apple kept the lunchboxes, water bottles and the like. How I wished I was as tall as Apple, my legs were hurting from trying to stretch so much and still I couldn’t reach what I was aiming for.
