After losing Steve, Peggy and I became close. Every time someone said a negative thing about either of us the other would punch them in the face. Well, I would sometimes send force fields, but Peggy made me stop.
Howard went out for weeks trying to find Steve's body to bring him back home, but never found him. Although he did find the tesseract and when he showed me the blue glowing square I said, "No making weapons with that thing and keep it locked away. I never want to see it ever," and walked away before he could respond.
I often visited the meadow that Bucky showed me that night after we left the bar. It was the one thing no one could take away from me, it was the only thing I had left of him besides his file.
When Peggy and I were putting away files one day, Colonel Phillips came over and gave each of us a file. Peggy opened hers to see everything of record that we had on Steve and I opened mine to see the same, but of Bucky's. We smiled at the photos of them and I heard Peggy say, "They may be gone Nicki, but they will be always with us in our hearts." I hugged Peggy and said, "Always with us." I pulled away giving Peggy one last smile before grabbing Bucky's file and walking away.
I layed down in the middle of the meadow staring up at the clear blue sky.
"I knew I would find you here," I sat up to see Howard standing looking around the meadow.
"It's beautiful. I see why you can't get enough of it," he said walking towards me and sitting down. "How did you find me?" I asked my brother plucking flowers and stringing them together. "I followed you one day after you wouldn't eat breakfast. You know Jarvis was upset he made your favorite that day," Howard replied.
I finished streaming the flowers together and leaned over and sat them on Howard's head, "There now you are a pretty face too," he chuckled and asked, "What is this Nico?" pointed at the flowers on his head.
"It's a flower crown Howard," I said putting one on my head as well. Instead of replying Howard just smiled.
"Bucky showed me this spot, it's where he asked me to be his girl," I whispered laying back down. I heard Howard sigh, but didn't say anything.
"I miss them Howard," I whispered staring at the at the sun as it started to set. Tears once again building up in my eyes. I closed my eyes,
"Oh, I am terribly sorry ma'am I did not see you there," a small gentleman around my height said bumping into me, Steve. "Well then, if that is how we get to know yours. Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, but my friends call me Bucky." he said grabbing my hand and kissed it.
I didn't realize I let the tears fall till I felt Howard pull me into his lap hugging me close to him and kissed my forehead, "I know you miss them Nico, but they're always with you no matter what. In here," he said pointing to where my heart it.
"Promise to never leave me Howard, I can't lose you too. I'll go crazy if I do," I said trying to stop the tears from falling. Howard kissed my forehead, "I'll always be by your side Nico. I won't ever leave you alone. I promise."
