The first girl has left.We were all pretty emotional when Carol gathered her few belongings and strode out of camp, a sad smile on her face.
"The mother hen has left the pen." Sam had said as we watched Carol vanish into the abyss of greenery.
We are given no time to grieve, as Ant and Dec soon appear asking us to choose two of us to take part in a challenge called Hell or High Water.
No one really wants to do it.
I stick up my hand, "I'll go."
Joel immediately sticks up his hand, "Me too!" He sounds wary and cautious, but I'm glad he'll be doing this hellish challenge with me (pun intended).
"Good luck guys!" Sam gives me a quick hug before returning to Scarlett, Ola and Lisa.
We amble out of camp, slightly nervous but pumped up for the challenge, the excitement currently outweighing the stress.
"I doubt it'll be heights again. I bloody hate heights." Joel squirms as he pushes through a bunch of vines.
"I know." I chuckle, licking a patch of grass on the walkway.
"Let me guess..." Joel begins. "You hate snakes?"
I stop in my tracks. "How did you-"
Joel shrugs as we wade into the trial area. "I know things."
When I'm sat on a wooden chair, facing what looks like a million hissing snakes, I begin to regret my decision to volunteer for this trial.
Joel is in a huge water tank, gathering stars. Every time he gains a star, the water level in my own compartment increases, which freaks the few snakes out a little.
"That's four stars Joel." Dec comments as the water level heightens a further few inches.
More snakes.
More water.
More snakes.
More water.
No, think of it this way, more meals for camp, less hungry stomachs.
More meals.
Less hunger.
More meals.
Less hunger.
"One more Joel!" I shout as he takes a deep breath before plunging down into the depths of the immense tank, releasing the star from its box.
The snakes are wrapping themselves around my neck, my ankles, hissing I my face, right next to my ears, but when Joel gets all the stars? I could cry.
"Yes Calla!"
"Yes Joel!" I scream, slightly less loudly than him because I don't want to freak out the snakes anymore than they already are.
The snakes are taken off of my skin and I'm released from the chamber, as is Joel.
"That's nine stars which means nine meals for camp, well done you two!" The two presenters congratulate us.
"I thought you said you were afraid of snakes?" Joel queries, towelling his hair dry before handing me the towel to dry my own.
"I am."
"You seemed fine in there!" He grins, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, "What a brave soul you've been." Joel chuckles as we begin our trek back to camp.
"I was dying inside." I laugh awkwardly to myself as I dry the ends of my dirty blonde hair with the damp towel (thanks Joel).
When we reach camp and inform them of the nine star meal we'll be having tonight, spirits are immediately raised.
We eat our meal side by side, Joel's arm around my shoulder, "We make a good team." He whispers into my hair.
"The best team." I whisper back as Joel plants a soft kiss on my forehead.
We sit by the crackling fire, the sun rising slowly.
"It'll be me today." I whisper, so to not wake the others up.
Joel shrugs, "What would I do without my best girl?" My heart flutters a little at this but I quickly laugh it off.
"Probably cry." I chuckle.
Joel nudges my shoulder. "I'd miss you." He smiles, looking straight into my eyes.
I move my eyes away, feeling my cheeks flush. "I'd miss you too."
"Calla, please get your things and leave camp."
When I hear my name, Joel immediately pulls me up off the log and hugs me tight. "Calla! You promised you wouldn't leave me!" He chuckles sadly.
I wipe the tear from my eye, "I'll see you soon Joel." I smile a wobbly smile.
Joel dries my eyes with his thumb and I dry his with mine.
"Keep being amazing. I'll be waiting for you at the end of the bridge." I murmur into his shirt.
"I should be waiting for you at the end of the bridge." Joel mutters.
I shake my head, place my hands on his shoulders. "Thank you, for everything, for making me feel welcome and loved, for being your crazy and caring self, I'll see you soon Joel." I smile, moving away from him a saying goodbye to everyone else in camp.
"Bye Lisa." I cry.
Lisa and I hug for a long time, crying into each others shirts before I'm dragged away to the bridge.
As I stroll along the bridge, tears in my eyes, I hear them, calling my name.
Goodbye camp.
