Luffy x Reader - I thought we were

Today was the day. No going back now. You gave yourself a last minute pep talk before heading out to find the biggest pirate dork the entire Grand Line has ever known: your captain.

"Good luck, (Name)~" Nami giggled while sunbathing on the ship's deck, eyes gleaming with mischief behind her large sunglasses.

"Nami, if you know something, please tell me so I can save myself the humiliation..." You sighed nervously.

You planned on giving Luffy some sweets that you had made yesterday. Knowing that brainless yet lovable idiot, food seemed to be the only thing getting to his heart. Sanji even took the time to instruct you on how to make them, despite how he was extremely against the idea of the slightest possibility that you and Luffy would actually progress into a relationship.

It wasn't very long since you had realized that you had feelings for your captain. After some time you decided that you wanted to be more than friends with him. So you started treating him differently than you normally would.

It was strange to him, at first. He would question why you would share some of your snacks with him when you usually wouldn't (since he scarfs them down within seconds, leaving you with nothing but crumbs). Then he began wondering why you started playing all the games you didn't like when he would suggest them.

Luffy was, obviously, confused as hell. But all the more reason to put more effort into it, yeah?

"Do you really think giving sweets is gonna get your little crush on him through his thick skull?" Usopp asked you.

"Wha-?! Wait, who told you?!"

"It's kinda obvious, (Name)," Usopp snickered. "You're super nice to him now and almost always letting him off the hook."

"Well... That's..."

"I don't think it's all that bad," Robin joined in the conversation with a meaningful smile. "Luffy seems to be quite fond of her now more than ever. I guess you can say her actions have given her some progress."

"H-Huh?? Oh, uhh, I...."

"We see them holding hands more often now too," Usopp closed his eyes and nodded in agreement. "Though I'm not sure Luffy even meant anything by it. He probably just thinks of it as a friendly gesture."

Ouch.

Hearing that pierced an invisible spear straight through your heart. It was true though, no use denying it. Luffy was just clueless that way.

"W-WELL THAT'S GONNA CHANGE!!!" You suddenly shouted, gaining everyone's attention. "Starting today, I'm gonna be his girlf--"

"Hi (Name)!!" Luffy greeted from behind you.

"EEEEEEK!!!!" You shrieked and dropped the bag of sweets. Turning around, you find Luffy smiling and blinking at you innocently. "L-LUFFY! When did you get here?!"

Luffy tilted his head side to side in thought. You could hear the others surpressing their laughter from behind you.

"Well, Zoro and I went to the island's forest for a little adventure." He narrated. "But then I saw this really cool beetle so I ran off to catch it..! It got away though..." He pouted childishly at that. You giggled. "Then I couldn't find Zoro so I went back here."

"Is Zoro still out there?" Robin asked and looked back at the forest of the island you were currently docked at.

"He'll find the ship." Nami rolled her eyes with uninterest. "Eventually."

Luffy grinned, nodding at his navigator's words, then hummed curiously as he bent down to pick up the bag you had dropped. "What's this? Smells yummy~" He licked his lips and peeked inside the bag. "WHHOOAAA!! Macarons! Scones! And cookies!"

You smiled at his reaction. It was definitely worth staying up all night for.

"I made them for you. You know, since you like eating so much and all..."

"Wow, really?!" Luffy's eyes began twinkling. "Thanks, (Name)! You're a real great friend!!"

Yikes. There was that word again.

Sighing in defeat, you decided to just tell him since he clearly doesn't seem to understand why you're doing all this just for him.

"Luffy... Listen, I don't wanna be just friends with you anymore. I wanna be more than that!" You blurted out, determined to finally be out of the friendzone.

Usopp, Nami, Robin, and everyone else on the ship stopped what they were doing and listened in to the confession. Luffy was munching on one of the chocolate cookies and staring at you quizzically.

"Luffy, I really really really like you! I mean, I LOVE YOU! Please let me be your girlfriend!" You shut your eyes, now feeling embarrassed that you were shouting this out.

Emotions took control over you. But you really didn't see any point of stopping them now since there were witnesses to your little outburst. The ship stayed quiet and you began to feel anxious.

You opened one eye and checked Luffy's expression.

What the...?

Luffy still had that same blank and clueless expression as he continued to stare at you. Wasn't he going to say something? He didn't look exactly speechless because you just said that you loved him or anything. He just looked... lost. Like he has no idea what was going on.

"Uhh... Luffy?" You called out, now as confused as he is.

"Mm-hmm?" He hummed in response.

"....Did you hear what I said?" You asked slowly as if suspecting him to have fallen asleep during your confession.

"Yeah," He replied with a nod, his expression still the same.

"THEN WHAT THE HELL!?!?!"

"What?"

"What do you mean what?!"

"Well... What do you want me to do?"

"GIVE HER A FUCKING ANSWER, YOU DIMWIT!!!" Sanji yelled from the kitchen window, ready to throw a steaming hot frying pan at his face.

Luffy looked up at Sanji as the others tried to calm him down. He was even more confused.

"Why do you need an answer to that?" He asked you.

"Because... You can't just leave me hanging like that. I wanna know what you think of me." You answered as simply as you can to avoid any more confusion. "Do you want to stay friends or... do you want to be in a relationship with me too and be my boyfriend?"

You shyly looked down at your hands which were now clutching the hem of your shirt. Luffy raised one eyebrow at you, "I... thought we already were?" He continued to eat the snacks and just shrugged.

"Umm... what??" It was your turn to be confused. "WHAT????"

"I once asked Sanji and Chopper why you were acting so differently. I thought you were sick but Chopper said that wasn't it. Then I asked Sanji since he knows a lot about girls--"

"Why didn't you just ask Nami or Robin?" You interrupted.

"Because Nami usually just beats me up when I ask something and I can't really understand most of the things Robin tells me." Luffy explained. "Anyways, Sanji told me that you're acting all weird cuz you like me. And I like you too."

"...So you automatically thought we were dating?" You facepalmed. "Then why did you say 'friend' instead of 'girlfriend' earlier??"

"Huh? Aren't they kinda the same?"

Everyone groaned in disbelief. Especially you. Luffy gave a lighthearted laugh and wrapped his arm around your shoulders. Even after knowing Luffy all this time, his stupidity still manages to surprise you.
