I'm just waking up on Sunday morning, climbing out of bed to get ready to head down to the kitchen for a cup of coffee when a knock sounds on the door. I sigh, standing up and slipping a pair of bunny slippers onto my feet. Maya had bought them for me as a gag gift for Christmas a few years back but I actually loved them and wore them quite often.
"Just a minute" I call out as I pad across the floor before finally I pull open the door and come face to face with Lucas. "Oh um good morning?" I murmur, leaning against my doorframe.
He offers me a soft smile. "Morning. I uh, I didn't wake you did I?" he asks but I shake my head.
"No, no. I was getting up. Do you need something?" I ask, crossing my arms over my chest as I make the subconscious realization that I'm not wearing a bra.
"Yea I was uh gonna take a shower in my room but there were no towels" he explains. That made sense, that room was a guest room and since Hayden was usually our only guest I didn't really bother to keep up with that spare bathroom.
"No problem. I'll get you a few" I smile, turning and heading into my bathroom as I hear him walk into my room.
I grab a couple bath towels and a variety of hand towels and washcloths before walking back out to my bedroom where I find Lucas analyzing the pictures on my dresser. "See any you like?" I ask, walking up beside him. He glances over at me and smiles.
"She looks just like you Riles" he replies, pointing to a photo from Avery's first birthday. I shrug. I supposed she did look pretty similar to me but there was one distinct difference.
"Maybe, except her eyes" I argue. "Those are all you."
He nods. "I suppose you may have a point there" he says, trailing off before looking around at the rest of the pictures. "None from high school?" he asks confusedly. I shake my head.
"You were in all of them, except a select few of Maya that I have strewn around the house" I explain. "I couldn't risk Avery seeing you and asking questions."
He nods in understanding while I stand awkwardly beside him until he continues. "Is it weird? Having me back in your life?" he asks abruptly.
I hug the towels to my chest and release a deep, thoughtful sigh. "It's a good weird, I suppose. I honestly just didn't think we'd ever get here."
"And now that we have?" he asks, raising an eyebrow at me. I chuckle, handing him his towels.
"Now, we need to take this one step at time. A lot has changed" I remind him. He nods in agreement.
"I know that, but is there any part of you that thinks that perhaps we could ever get back what we had?" he asks, his eyes softening. I smile, reaching up to wrap my hand around his neck and tugging at his hair.
"I really, really hope so" I murmur, staring into his emerald eyes. "But I think we have to become friends again first as well as co-parents."
"Okay" he agrees, placing his hand over mine. "I'm a patient guy, Riles."
I chuckle, removing my hand and letting it drop back to my side. "I'll keep that in mind."
"That's all I ask" he replies playfully, leaning down to kiss my cheek. "I'll be in the shower" he adds as he pulls away and walks out of my room.
I let out a deep breath and place my hands against my cheeks, feeling flushed as a giddy grin spreads across my lips.
It had been years since I felt this way and while I knew it was idiotic to get attached to him, it was already too late. I was still in love with him and this week was going to be the death of me.
