Lucas' POV
"Mom? You still there?" I ask, clutching my phone tightly in my hand. I had just laid a lot on her and I wasn't sure if she was still conscious. I know it would've been enough to make me pass out had I not been living it.
"I-uh, honey what exactly do you expect me to say?" she asks, a laugh bubbling out of her. "You tell me you're divorced and living with your high school girlfriend who is apparently actually the mother of my first and only grandchild...well until she has the twins of course which were evidently planned despite me not even knowing about your reconciliation" she says, seemingly running short of breath.
I groan, dropping my head into my hands. When she put it like that it did sound awfully hard to comprehend let alone react appropriately. "I don't know what I want you to say" I admit. "That you understand? That you're happy for me?" I try.
A pause hangs over the line. "Are you happy?"
"Happier than I've been since I left high school" I admit. "I know I don't have to remind you how miserable the last fourteen years of my life have been."
She sighs. "You certainly don't. Honey, I'm so sorry for any role I played in that unhappiness. I just thought that you'd eventually get over her-."
"That was never gonna happen mom" I reply, a smile tugging at my lips as my girlfriend walks into the room wearing a simple pair of jeans and a purple blazer. She was on anti-nausea medication and actually got out of bed, her bright and sunshiny self.
"Mhm" she hums. I put my hand over the speaker on my phone.
"Need help with anything, beautiful?" I ask. She was carrying twins after all and I wasn't about to let her lose them because she was too stubborn to ask for my help.
"Nope" she pops the p in the same dramatic fashion as Maya and I chuckle, watching her reach for the Frosted Flakes on top of the fridge.
"Sorry ma. Checking on Riles" I explain as way of apologizing.
"I'm sure you are. You know, I haven't seen her in years or met my granddaughter. Perhaps I should come up for a few days" she suggests. I gnaw my bottom lip, thinking it over. It wasn't an awful idea.
"Uh, let me run it by Riles and get back to you. I gotta go for now, work and all."
"Ah yes. The vet clinic. I swear you're a different man, sweetheart."
I couldn't argue. New house, new job, new babies on the way but one thing remained the same, the woman I've loved since I caught her on the subway. "I'll talk to you later, ma."
"You better. I love you sweetheart."
"Love you too ma" I agree before hanging up at the same moment my daughter walks in.
"Did I miss grandma?" she asks, motioning to my cell phone in disappointment.
I nod solemnly. "You did but uh" I pause, looking at my girlfriend who was shoveling a mouthful of cereal into her mouth. I stifle a laugh. "She wants to visit."
Riley swallows and stirs her spoon around her bowl. "Your mom?"
"And maybe my dad" I shrug, unsure. "How do we feel about that? I ask, drawing out the question slowly.
Riley quirks her lips to the side. "We think that I kept not only you from your daughter but your entire family from...whatever she is to them. I doubt your mother is happy with me right now."
"Riles-." My mom, of course, is disappointed to have lost fourteen years of spoiling her granddaughter but she was just as easy at forgiveness as I was. I mean, where do you think I got it from? There was nothing for her to worry about.
