"It's not fair" Avery exclaims, slapping a flyer onto the counter detailing the information for a house party that would be held later tonight, Halloween night. It was honestly hard to take her anger seriously though since she was dressed liked Tinker Bell, complete with sparkly wings attached to her back.

"Honey, it's a school night." Regardless of the holiday, today was still only Wednesday which meant that after the excitement of today, tomorrow would still only be Thursday.

"But mom" she groans. Avery and I didn't fight often but as she got older she'd test my patience from time to time with her teenage rebellion. "Emma is throwing it" she whines. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion.

"I thought we were done with Emma" I think out loud. Avery groans.

"We are! But since she started dating Ben she's become the most popular girl in the school and she invited us to this party. If we don't go my entire high school experience will be ruined."

I purse my lips, keeping my thoughts to myself. I doubted that missing one party would ruin the entirely of high school. "Avery, if it were any other night-."

It's then that Lucas joins us, freshly showered and smelling like cologne. "Morning beautiful" he greets me, pecking my lips. "Good morning daughter" he then says to Avery.

Her eyes light up and I watch as the metaphorical light bulb goes off in her head. I open my mouth to stop her but she's too quick. "Dad, can me and Hayden go to a party tonight?"

I've never had to deal with this before, my daughter playing me and Lucas against each other. I don't know whether the moment should make me feel sentimental or angry.

"What did your mother say?" he asks, taking me by surprise. Avery had certainly become a daddy's girl in the last few months and I had honestly expected him to give in without hesitation.

"It doesn't matter" Avery says dismissively. "Your opinion matters just as much as hers."

"True" he agrees, pouring himself a cup of coffee and taking a long, thoughtful sip. "You can go if your mother says it's okay."

I sigh. Of course. Now I'm the bad guy. "Luke, it's a school night."

"That is also true. But, how about this. You get all your homework done and you promise to be home by eleven and we'll let you go."

It wasn't an awful idea. I didn't exactly love the late curfew but it was Halloween.

Her face lights up. "Really? I can go?" she exclaims, already bouncing on her heels.

"You can go" I confirm. She squeals, throwing her arms around us. "You guys are the best" she exclaims, letting us go and looking down at her phone. "Hayden is here, I gotta go. Love you" she shouts, grabbing her bag and running out of the house.

Lucas looks at me confusedly. "Don't you have work today?"

"Nope" I pop the p dramatically. "I am going to see Maya today." They had gotten home from the hospital almost a week ago and I hadn't seen her since. It was killing me.

"You took off to see Maya?"

"Don't act surprised" I reply with a chuckle. "Besides, holidays are coming up now and this will probably be my last day off until Thanksgiving."
