Lucas' car is already in the driveway when we pull up after school. My stomach churns thinking of the conversation that we have to have. Of course we weren't exactly preventing this from happening...in fact we were attempting to make this happen but maybe he thought it would take longer.
Maybe he'd changed his mind.
Maybe he'd leave.
"Mom." I look over to Avery with glazed eyes. She places her hand over mine and offers me a gentle smile. "Everything is going to be fine. Dad is going to be so excited."
"And if he isn't?" She rolls her eyes, not even dignifying me with a response as she pushes open her door and climbs out of the car.
I release a deep breath and decisively climb out and start the trek into the house. I swear that it's longer than I remember...either that or I'm admittedly being a bit dramatic.
Avery is already raiding the fridge when I walk into the house while Lucas puts away groceries that he had seemingly stopped to get on the way home from work. "Hey beautiful" he greets me, beaming as he looks up from his task. "How was the first day?"
"Interesting" I reply making Avery laugh. She takes a sip of her ICE drink and twists the cap back on, hugging it to her chest.
"On that note, I'll be in my room" she says smoothly, earning a confused gaze from her father that she ignores as she walks off to her bedroom.
Lucas then turns his confused expression to me instead. "Am I missing something?"
I look towards the living room. "Come sit with me." I express the statement like a question and he immediately nods his head and follows me over to the couch, taking a seat beside me.
I release another deep breath, knotting my fingers together. "I took a test today" I reveal vaguely.
I look up to find my poor boyfriend even more confused. "Okay. What kind of test?"
I bite my bottom lip. "The kind that pretty accurately tells you if you're having a baby or not."
His eyes widen. "You did what?"
"Luke-."
"Why do you look so worried? Was it negative? Riles, you know we can keep trying-."
"Lucas! It was positive" I interrupt him and a wide grin spreads across his lips.
"Are you serious? We're having another baby?" he shouts in excitement, jumping off the couch. "Riley oh my gosh" he exclaims, grabbing me and pulling me up off the couch. He crashes his lips onto mine and all my worries fade away into our heated liplock. "But wait" he begins as we pull apart, "why were you so upset then?"
I avert my gaze from his, focusing on the floor. "I thought you'd be upset."
"What? Why? Riles we've been trying for months-."
"I know but now it's real. We're really having another baby, Luke."
"Yea we are and I'm not going anywhere so stop worrying so much" he adds, caressing my cheek. "I love you so much Riles."
I finally smile back at him and let myself actually let the reality set in.
Somehow my wildest dreams had come true and I had gotten the love of my life back and not only that, we we adding onto our already perfect family. It was everything I ever wanted but never thought I could have.
My own imperfect happy ending.
