Waking up early wasn't in her plan but all the excitement was way too much to handle so Kady got without waking up the pups and made some tea with a muffin. She wasn't trying to act the upcoming part as a tourist but rather she enjoyed the pair in the morning. It soothed her.
Around five in the morning, she grabbed her bags and headed out of the house, locking the door and saying a quick prayer to the sky.
Kady called called an Uber and was picked up rather quickly as well as taken to LAX before she even knew it. Once the driver was paid via telephone, she headed over to pick up her ticket but noticed how early she was. She didn't mind so she walked up and smiled "Hi, I have a ticket already."
"Okay, do you ha-"
"Right here." She procured the ticket verification from her purse and give it to the lady whilst making sure she didn't seem rude.
"Alrighty then." The woman began to clear the information and process all the details. Once that was said and done, she asked "Do you have your ID?"
"OH! Right..." Scavenging through her purse, she located her ID and proceeded to hand it over.
"Thank you." The woman finished up the computer work, handed Kady the ticket and added works sending her on her way. As she left, she lugged her bags to the conveyor belt and kept her carry on. Luckily her carry on had her books so she had enough entertainment for the waiting period before flying.
While walking, she noticed a quaint coffee shop and decided and extra perk of tea would be perfect to calm her nervousness from flying.
She ordered Earl Grey but had the man at the register use her tea cup- which is always handy to have in situations as such- and as they finished up the order, she fished out of her purse, her snail.
Now, the Snail sounds completely outrageous but what it does is when you place it on the brim of the tea cup or mug, the string from the tea bag is wrapped around so it doesn't fall in. Completely ingenious was Kadys' thought but it was the small things that seemed to make her smile the most so she was satisfied.
She chose the seat closest to the exit but against the wall so she could see entry and exit points as well as ongoing people. That was a trick her father had taught her when she was seventeen or eighteen but it stuck and that was all that mattered. It made her feel safe.
The first book she grabbed out of her bag was an old romance she had bought on the trip to Tehachapi, CA with her parents and brother. It had snowed hard that year and they had so much fun visiting the German restaurant...
She caught herself before drifting further into her memory so she could at least start drinking her tea. She started from her favorite part in the story where the guy walked into the kitchen finally seeing the girl and flirting way too hard. It was cute. She smiled to herself and sipped some of the tea and as she got to the perfect part, a young man walked over and sat right across from her.
"I know this is forward but-"
"You're right, this is."
He smirked and slyly looked at her "... but i like the book you're reading."
"Is that so?" Kady looked at him quizzically "What's you're favorite part of it?"
He hesitated and began speaking again. "The part where they come together, in the kitchen."
"Now, was that you're literary assessment or are you just good at looking at covers and making crap up." She flipped the book up showing what looked like a man sauteing food but the man's shirtless body was obviously the focal point of the cover.
The young man gleamed with amusement "I'm pretty sure the second one is right. I'm Adam."
"Nice to have met you Adam, I'm the strange woman you sat with."
"No name? Hmm, mystery is always a pleasing part of anyone's day."
"So long as it's the only pleasure derived from this conversation."
"Are you always so forwards with men?"
She chuckled inwardly "Do you always find the need to be complacent with strangers? If so, that's a habit you really should break."
He stared strangely at her as though she were a creature from another planet "Are you a lesbian?"
She gawked at him unbelievably "Are you serious? Did you just ask if I'm a lesbian due to the fact that you intruded my concentration from reading this book and then you tried making remarks which you knew nothing about and THEN proceeded to make small talk with me even though I was so obviously trying to end the conversation. But now your mind can't possibly fathom the idea that a woman may actually just want to drink tea and read peacefully waiting for her flight so if that's the case, then she must be a lesbian."
He stared blankly at her as though his mind was reeling.
"Am I close or am I just that good?"
He came back to his senses and got up, walking away muttering what sounded like profanities and insults but it didn't affect her. She was not going to just idly sit by and have her personal waiting time ruined.
After a few minutes, she did feel a bit of sadness for Adam but she couldn't do anything now. She'd wished she could've said something else but whatever.
It came around nine thirty so she grabbed her purse and bag and made her way to her designated terminal. She walked through the double doors and made her way to her seat but someone had already been in her seat.
"Um, excuse me ma'am."
The lady didn't seem to know she was there so she tried again.
"Excuse me ma'am."
Finally the lady recognized she was there "Yes?"
"I believe you're in my seat... seat 14C."
"No, this is my seat."
Kady got a bit frustrated but tried to keep it in. "Could you try to check again please?"
"No."
Kady just stared at her and couldn't believe this woman so what better to do than ask a flight attendant. She turned and made her way towards the middle of the plane and found a stewardess.
"Hi, there seems to be a discrepancy in the tickets."
The lady turned, smiled and walked towards the seats. Kady showed her ticket then asked the woman if she could see hers.
"Why should I? This is my seat."
"Yes ma'am I understand but just to ensure nothing is wrong I may have to double check."
"Fine." The woman pulled the ticket out.
"Oh my... yes, both of you got the same ticket."
Kady looked around wondering what movie she landed in and replied "So what does that mean for the seats."
"Just give me a moment."
The stewardess waked away and the woman in her seat looked at her disgusted and bickered "I'm not getting out of my seat. I've been standing a long time and have waited weeks for this trip." This was it, she thought, going home so soon.
Kady didn't know how to reply so she stood waiting for the stewardess. Once the stewardess came back kady asked "What's your name?"
"Well, it's Clara."
"Well Clara, this woman said she does not want to move from her seat."
"Is that true ma'am?"
"Yes it is and I mean every word."
"Very well then Miss Lee, come with me and we'll designate a new seat for you.
"HA! Have fun in Economy." hollered the woman.
A few minutes went by and finally Clara came back with a smile "Yes, miss Lee, there's a seat in First Class if you'd like to take it in apology for the miscommunication earlier and the paperwork problem."
Kady ogled at Clara but simply thanked her and moved on.
First class was a whole other world on it's own. With such luxurious seats and food for days, she didn't know where to begin. She tried to lay her chair back to take a little nap but decided against it and instead ordered food.
She chose the spicy crab with sushi rice and avocado for the entree. Once that was finished she then ordered the lobster risotto with shaved brussels sprouts as the garnish and a side of squash and zucchini. It was the most heavenly experience she'd ever had and decide and ice cream sundae would be a great wrap up for the desert. The wine wasn't so bad either but Kady was more of a Bar N' Beer kind of woman. She didn't complain, courtesy drinks always were better than bought drinks.
As the flight went on, she pulled out another book. It was one about a Highland warrior falling in love but obviously not knowing it at first and the woman liking him but losing hope and towards the end they fall madly in love. It sounds like others, but every detail is it's own and that's what Kady looks for. Bookmarking parts where they have their first kiss, when they get even closer to their love, and even them making sweet, sweet love.
Those parts weren't bookmarked because of their content, it was simply because as she read the romantic parts, she felt that there would be hope that one day she too would find someone who thought she was the most extravagant and gorgeous woman on the planet.
She knew, however, that that was all a story and just hopes but really, they were a wish that would never come true. The flight was soon over and she grabbed her bags and walked out. The air smelled different, like... change. She was overjoyed to be going through the terminals to find her bags on the conveyor belts and once all was said and done, she found her car rental place. As loyal member with her international car renting service, she was successful in getting a decent car for the two weeks she would be staying. A MZ GS 180. It was fairly priced so she took it.
She went out, got all 4 of her bags in the car and drove down to The Greyhound Cottage on Manor road. It was quite a ways but nothing she couldn't handle. She'd read all about the driving ways in London as well as all the laws that pertain to driving.
Among other things she's read, she was also able to find some nifty places to visit like Daunts Book- or Gays the Word and Big Green Books- which are actual book stores.
When she arrived at the Cottage, she rang the bell for the old woman and was absolutely excited to see a woman whom looked to be in her 100s come out.
"Hello Darling, welcome to the Greyhound Cottage. Do you have a reservation?"
Kady was trying to keep her composure and responded "Yes...ma'am."
"Alrighty then, there's the room down the corridor to the left, ya can't miss it."
Kady was internally screaming from utter adorableness but simply said thank you and nodded on her way. It was way more cuteness that she could have bared so she started lugging all the bags up when a man- by the looks of his tag- named Nicolas, began to grab her bags.
He didn't look like anything from the states, he looked like something out of an international magazine or something. He had a ponytail of sandy blond hair with hazel eyes and a soft jaw line, not feminine looking but delicates. His body wasn't muscular but he wasn't scrawny,he just looked like a tall guy with some experience in carrying bags and large things. Though his butt wasn't so bad.
"Need help miss?"
Kady looked over to the bags and the second flight of stairs "yes please, and thanks."
They both began carrying some type of luggage and he began the conversation.
"So, where ya comin' from? By the accent, mainly american?"
"Well, depends how I'm feeling. I like to change my accent so it's pretty cool."
"Really, wow." he looked at her in bemusement "That sure is talent. I'm pretty sure my talents pertain to me cleaning bedrooms and making early morning breakfast."
"Hahaha, well, someone's gotta cook. So long as it's someone with that talent then we are good."
His laugh seemed to bellow from inside like a genuine laugh. It was a good sound.
Once all the suitcases were placed in the room he smiled "Breakfast is at seven thirty and tea is served at 8. Any tea requests?"
"Yes, umm, Earl Grey?"
He laughed again "Figured as much miss, it's a tourists pick."
"Right," she felt herself redden "then that'll be it but what if you have your own tea cup and kettle. Is there any way to be able to use the stove tops if I'm ever in need of tea?"
"You have your own?" he seemed genuinely surprised "On your vacation? Well sure, come by and I can open the kitchen up when you need to."
She was a bit taken aback with the comment but it wasn't like the guy at the airport, this was pure kindness and it made her feel a bit better than treating him with unkindness."Thanks, oh do I tip you or something? I feel silly now."
"No need," he lightly pushed her hand away "your smile was payment enough. Good evening miss Lee."
"Same to you, Nicolas."
She closed the door behind her and sat smiling. He was super nice and honestly, that was something she wasn't used to in the states unless you'd known someone forever. She couldn't stop thinking of how pretty cool he looked saying no to the money and his laugh, it was also kinda cool.Wait, was he flirting?
Kady hoped he wasn't because even though he did seem like a great guy, it wasn't cool for her to just automatically be all googly eyes with some stranger. Plus living for two weeks under the same roof would be a bit awkward if anything did happen.
Turning to unpack her bags, she only needed to take out what was in her biggest bag. Her favorite books. There were only 48 last she counted so she stacked them exactly how they should be and took out her photograph of her family- including the pups.
Changing into her Avengers tee shirt and Loki pants, she was able to sit down and start typing out extraordinary details of her characters and what they saw. Details were spilling out of her similar to a fire hydrant rupturing.
Indie music played in the back and she'd come to realize she'd spent the rest of the day in the bedroom. She closed her laptop and snuggled into bed. As a first day, this wasn't so bad...
