Charlie didn't come to school Monday, which made me think it was my fault. It irritates me to know that he just ran without saying anything. He doesn't owe me anything, but I thought we shared something. Or maybe not, because I was just using him. Tuesday in detention I waited for him to show up.
To my surprise Mellow walked in. My eyes went wide as he stepped into the room. His glasses were broken and his eye was black. He sat two desk ahead of me. He didn't even bother to look at me. The teacher came in and took her seat. Before hand " Don't talk" was already written on the board. I stood up and moved in the desk next to Mellow slipping Issa a note saying I'd be back.
When I sat next to Mellow he still avoided eye contact. I open my notebook and wrote," What happen?" On the first line. I tried to slip it under his arm when the teacher didn't look up. Which was always most of the time. Mellow glanced at me seeming annoyed enough, but I had to find out.
He passed the note back after writing on it.
" I don't want to talk about it!" When I seen the exclamation mark I knew he was angry. The detention lady stood up and stepped in front of the desk.
" Class I'll be stepping out for a second, that does not give you all the right to talk."
After saying that she exited the classroom. The classroom burst out in conversation without even letting the door close fully. I turned to Mellow who looked like he had seen it coming.
" Don't Jamie, just drop it," he protested.
" Mellow, that's all we've been doing with you this year is dropping it. Your my frie-"
" Well I don't need you're friendship," he interrupted. " You and Ailani are always in my business just let it go!"
" Do you know who you're talking to Mellow! I've been with you through thick and thin. You can't get rid of me."
I held out my arm. Along time ago Mellow, Ailani, Myah, and I burned our wrist with the letter P like branding. It was stupid, because we could have gotten infected, but it was our little secret that no one could take away from us. He looked down at his on his left arm. His frown was deeper then ever. I felt so bad for not being able to help.
" Power through the strongest struggle," he whispered. That's what the P meant. That's what it meant to all of us. Especially when it came to our friendship.
" Damn right," I say through my anger.
" They jumped me ok."
" who?"
" Spencer's friends."
" But why would-"
" Because they think I'm messing him up, when in all honesty he's messing my life up!"
" Messing him up?"
" They say he quit basketball, broke up with Courtney, who by the way got them some of the nicest things, and even let his grades drop, because of me. But you know what the crazy part is? He stop talking to me!"
" Address," I say.
" Huh," Mellow says confused.
" Address. I know you know where he lives. I'll talk to him."
" Jamie-"
" No Mellow, you want to let it go that's fine. But I refuse, and I do mean I refuse to let anybody get away with hurting someone I care about."
Mellow gave me the most unforgettable smile. He still seemed sad, but I felt like I made him feel just a little bit better. I meant every word of what I said. Mellow didn't hesitate after that. He gave me the address immediately. I had to wait until after school to go because Spencer didn't come to school either. That's why I asked for the address.
