When I woke, my first thought was that today was the day. My sixteenth birthday. The day i got my own chambers, the day I got my own Ladies in Waiting, and the day I was going to open my mother's library.
I rolled out of bed. My sisters were also waking. I walked over to the window and pulled open the black curtains. We were still in mrouning. I walked over to my dresser and sat in front of the mirrior, to brush out my long dark hair.
"Everyone up. We must get dressed and join our father. I have a surpirse."
Alice spoke up. "What is it Sarah?"
I laughed. "If I told you then it wouldn't be a surprise."
We got dressed, Then headed down the stairs in order from oldest to youngest, with me in the lead, to the dinning hall. Father was already there waiting for us. When we entered he stood and bowed. Since mother's death almost one year ago, he rarley spoke to us. "Good morning, ladies." He sat down again and we followed suit.
We ate in silence. When everyone was done my father stood to leave, but I stood up and spoke before he could exit the room. 'No father. Before you leave I have something to show you." I glanced at my sisters, before continuing. "All of you."
Even though i spoke calmly, my father turned around and gave me a sharpe look. "Since when do you think you can speak to me so disrepctfully?"
This was how he had been since mother's death. A short fuse ready to explode at any moment. I looked him in the eye, and made my voice that of the true princess that I am. "That wasn't disrespectful and you know it father."
He took a step back. "Fine. What do you so despertely need to show us?" His voice had gone cold.
I lifted my head slightly. "Follow and you shall see." With that I left the dinning hall and headed on my way. I knew they would follow and didnt bother stopping to see them scramble out of the dinning hall.
I knew the way like I knew the back of my hand. With in a few minutes we were standing in front of the grand doors. I took the key from where i had hidden it in the bosom of my dress. Before i could unlock the doors my father spoke up, I had expeceted this. "What do you think you are doing."
Of course he knew what was behind these doors. He had been the one who had them built as a gift for my mother. They were gold with elaberate spirals and their initals carved into the wood. I spun around. "I am opening these doors."
He stepped up so that he was standing over me. "You have no right to. I closed these doors when your mother passed away and they are to stay closed."
I took a deep breath and took one step back. "No. They will be opened. I have the right to open them. Mother asked me to."
He became even anrgier. "She didn't say any such thing."
I turned back to the doors and unlocked them. "She did. She told me to open them on my sixteenth birthday." I pushed the doors open and stepped into the library.
