Remy's P.O.VSomething was wrong. I felt it the second I stepped out of her hospital room. God even I was doing it now. It's a cell. Maybe without the iron bars and metal bed, but it was a cell none the less. I paused for a moment, breathing in and trying to dispel the impending sense of doom before briskly walking to the elevator. The faster I got the book the sooner I could get back to her. Then I could make sure she was safe.
Right away the fact the book wasn't on her nightstand sent off warning alarms in my head. Eli wasn't known to be disorderly, everything in her room had its own specific place it was suppose to be in. I would know, I've gotten enough lectures from her for putting something away wrong. She never misplaced a book.
I sighed sitting down on the bed. I was being irrational but this dread that was welling up in the pit of my stomach wasn't helping. I pulled out my phone and sent her a text asking if it might be somewhere else. She didn't answer right away which was also unlike her. The only time she didn't answer three seconds after she got the text was when she was busy. But seeing as I left her confined in a room complaining of having nothing to do I found that highly unlikely.
When two minutes went by my own anxiety got the better of me and I gave up heading back downstairs. Worse case scenario I come back up right? That's the only thing that could go wrong. Right?
I felt my heart drop as elevator stopped and the metal doors slid open. I told myself it was just my Empathy getting the better of me. I had to be channeling someone else's emotions, their fears. It was irrational, where could she have gone. I unlocked the door, pressing down on the handle and letting it swing inwards.
She wasn't laying on the bed and right away i knew for a fact she wasn't in the small bathroom or closet either. The room was cold. Empty. I made myself check even though it was childish. Why would she be hiding in the closet?
Eli was gone.
"Remy?" I turned towards the doorway. Storm stood in the entrance, i'd left the door open when i began my hopeless search for her. She took three seconds to glance about the room and another to read my face before repeating what i was thinking. "She's gone."
I didn't even have time to reply when the sound of someone racing down the hall echoed through the room. Scott stopped outside of the door breathless with Hank not far behind him breathing much easier.
"We have no idea where Danny went to, we thought he might have come here." Hank said.
"Where's Eli?" Scott asked.
"Gone." I said finally aloud, but the word seemed foreign in my mouth.
"Shit." Scott hissed and before anyone could stop him he was half way down the hall. He turned and went out of sight. That's when the blaring sound of the school's lock down alarm went off. The metal halls were instantly bathed in the red glow of the lights that flashed in unison with the deafening screech. I couldn't help but look around helplessly unsure what to do. Unsure what I could do.
"Remy!" Storm yelled over the siren's wail. "Standing around isn't helping. You need to find Eli and you need to find her fast." she said moving closer to make sure I could here her. "Because if it's anyone but you she's gonna spook. And when someone's scared like she probably is, there is no telling what is going to happen." I blinked at her, still frozen in place. "Remy! Eli needs you." I felt her grab my arm calling my name and it was enough to shake me out of my stupor.
I took an unsure step forward and ended up halfway down the hall before I could recall how. I needed to get out of here and fast. This place was going to be locked down tighter than Fort Knox in the matter of seconds. I would know, I pulled a heist there once and it was ten times easier than trying to escape this place under a lock down DRILL. And this wasn't a drill. The elevator doors opened to the main floor and i didn't waste anytime throwing open the front doors and stumbling onto the front lawn.
