It was quiet, The sun was shining in softly through the cracks of the shack, finally after a couple of minutes we pulled apart, I grabbed my bag as did he and we were off to find Ade and Chris.
They were no where in sight, almost nothing was in sight except a tree that was a million miles away, so we started towards that. We didn't really talk for a while, I kept wiping my eyes because they stung a little. Every time I looked up we were a little closer to the tree but not by much.
After a couple of minutes of walking, Jeff slowly got closer to me and snaked his hand in mine, and squeezed it, I smiled gently and looked ahead, and noticed something else coming into view, or more like SOMEONE else, two figures were there standing by the tree. Afriad it was the 'things' i stayed away slightly hesitant, but another squeeze from Jeff i continued, until we got closer, I finally noticed them immediately and we both started running to them, "Ade!!" I yelled but it seemed she didnt here me. When we finally made it to them, they were looking almost directly at us but still didn't seem to see us, I slowly walked in front of her, she stared at the sky, I slowly put my hand on her shoulder, as soon as my hand made contact with her shoulder she jumped away from me and made a small squeek of fear, Chris was by her side in an instant, they both calmed when finally realizing it was just us. She jumped up quickly and hugged me. "Oh my god Mara, i thought y'all were dead!" I smiled and hugged her back "Nope we are very much alive, almost lost the Musical Note over there though," she grew worried quickly, "Why what happened?," she glanced at Jeff who was conversing with Chris, ,"That 'girl' tried to take him, but it disappeared when I got involved, " she nodded, "Thank god you were there then," I nodded in agreement.
After catching up about things, we were quickly off again, walking quietly, something would be said here and there but it was mostly silence. The silence wasnt bad or awkward it was just that we had nothing to say, so nothing was said.
After what seemed like hours we started coming up to these structures that looked like they were engulfed in flames, we all looked at each other nervously, but kept walking. Once we got closer, we noticed it was a city. We couldn't tell what city do to the fact that all the signs that should have been around it aren't anymore.
When we made it inside the city, my eyes brimmed with tears, dead bodies littered the ground, most of them children, little boys and girls, some didn't even look older then four. Abandoned bicycles and toy cars laid on front lawns, as tire swings swung empty. Jeff rubbed my back gently, Ade didn't even want to look anymore, she looked down at her shoes instantly. Chris's hands tightly closed in fists, as he looked around hesitant. It was a city of ember, as the buildings left burned to crisp.
We walked deeper into the city and found a store that had been left abandoned. We rummaged through everything restocking our bags. Everyone was quiet, no one wanted to bring up anything. Our hearts where already heavy as death was unfolded at our feet. We didn't want this...we never asked to be the survivors.....we didn't ask to get stuck together, we never asked for those children to die....But it happened anyway..why?
I don't know, and I never will. Now this burden is on us, and it hangs in the air like a broken wire that wont let go.
After we finished stocking up we found a near by motel and decided to stay for the night. Me and Ade in one room the Jeff and Chris in another.
Ade and I sat in silence for a very long time...we stared out the window, finally Ade broke the silence, "Mara, why did this have to happen to us?," I looked down at the ground, "You know I've been asking myseld the same question." She nodded and looked at me, "So you and Jeff?," I smiled softly, i knew she was gonna bring it up. "Well...it's not technically official yet," she clapped excitedly, "That's so cuute," i chuckled, "So has Chris made a move yet?' She shrugged, "I wouldn't be able to tell even if he did," i laughed, she was right, she was always oblivious when it came to flirting. We talked nonstop about Jeff and Chris before Ade decided to take a shower, and then me after her.
When we were done we laid on our beds and finally fell asleep.Jeffs P.O.V
I seriously don't know what to talk about with him...we barely know each other.
Chris sat quietly starring at his shoes. After a minute or two he looked up at me and smiled, "How do you do it?" I starred wide eyed, "Do what?" He sighed, "How are you so charming, Mara is basically in love with you, And i can't even start a conversation with Adelyn to save my freaking life," I smiled at him, was he asking me for advice? I looked at him, "Well me and Mara are more open with our feelings then you and Ade are...besides..she basically saved my life, when we separated.." Chris looked up quickly. "What? What happened," worry seeped through this words. I sighed, "The Female looking one, she basically tried taking my mind over, Mara woke me out of it before it completely engulfed me." He nodded, "Dang I'm sorry man," i starred at him, "She cried for me, because she was scared she was going to lose me....when i came out of the trance, she hugged me and held onto me like her life depended on it." He smiled, "she loves you man it's obvious....wait do you like her back?" I thought about it for a second before nodding my head slowly, he smiled, "Good, because y'all are cute together, now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna take a shower." He quickly went into the restroom. I smiled to myself as i laid on the bed and waited for Chris to get out so i could shower also. This journey isn't even halfway over.
