"There is a witch in town."

Jax looked up at Emily and raised an eyebrow.

"You haven't left the house in two weeks, how on earth do you know that?" he asked.

She was curled up on the couch in front of the tv, she still looked pale and worn but there was a bit more fullness to her cheeks and a brightness to her eyes that hadn't been there before. At his question she tilted her head up and gave him a smile.

"I can smell her."

Well that certainly seemed unusual for a beta, and it wasn't even like she was all that powerful of a beta anyway. There were a lot of people in and around the town, and at times even Jax had difficulty distinguishing between everyone.

"You can smell a single woman among twenty thousand plus people?" he asked, putting down his newspaper to stare at her.

"Not just any woman." She sat forward to meet his gaze. "A witch."

"And witches smell different to other women?"

"Well clearly." She folded her arms across her chest. "Or else I wouldn't be able to smell her would I?"

Jax opened his mouth to answer her but quickly closed it again and shook his head, sometimes it was just best not to ask stupid questions. This was something he had discovered after having two very opinionated women in his house for the past few weeks.

"Here you go dear."

At that moment Martha walked into the living room holding Steven, she headed straight over to Jax and deposited the baby into his arms. He smiled down at his son and cradled him against his chest.

"That's so adorable," said Emily.

Jax glared at her again. "I am not adorable."

With a roll of her eyes Emily looked up at Martha.

"Isn't he adorable?"

The smile Martha gave all three of them could only be described as fond, and she shook her head and shuffled back out towards the kitchen.

"Do you want to join my Pack?" The words tumbled out of Jax almost without any conscious thought on his part, and he felt like swallowing his own tongue when he saw the look of surprise on her face. "Of course you don't have to, if you don't you can stay here regardless."

Her eyes widened at that and she struggled to sit up. "Are you asking me to be your beta?"

Jax shrugged his shoulders and concentrated back on Steven.

"If you don't want to I completely understand, after all my entire Pack is dead ..."

"I was dead anyway as a rogue," she said.

He nodded his head, there was really no arguing with that one.

"It's entirely up to you."

She sat there on his ridiculously lumpy couch and stared at him for what felt like hours, before a small smile came to her face.

"Martha!" she called.

"Yes dear." Martha, who had probably being standing in the hallway listening to their conversation, walked back into the living room.

"Can you please take Steven?" asked Emily.

A wide grin split Martha's face and she hurried over to scoop up Steven from Jax's arms. "Are you sure you're strong enough for this?"

"Of course," laughed Emily. "He's not turning me, it's just a claim."

"Huh?" Jax looked between the two women. "What?"

"Come here." Emily snapped her fingers. "Bite me."

He slowly got to his feet, feeling the Alpha starting to come to the surface at the idea of increasing its Pack. However something inside him was rankled that a mere beta had dared tried to order him, an Alpha, around. It was the sparkle in Emily's eyes which clearly showed that she knew exactly what she had done that soothed his wolf.

"Are you sure?" he asked, walking towards her slowly.

She didn't answer his question but simply tipped her head to one side to expose her neck, and he watched as she closed her eyes.

"You know this isn't a mating bite right?" He just wanted to make sure that she hadn't got the wrong impression here.

"Of course it's not you idiot," she said. "I like girls and you prefer boys."

He had never had someone so perfectly guess his sexuality before. Like most Alpha's he was bisexual, it was something that was the best for the Pack as his true mate could be of any gender whilst at times, like with Steven, a child had to be conceived. Jax though had always felt himself drawn more to men than women, which made him wonder whether his true mate was a male. If he ever met them.

"Yeah." He gently pressed his fingers to her pulse point, and then looking her in the eye he slowly leaned down and pressed his teeth to the smooth skin of her throat.
