Ramen. His best friend's favorite meal. It's quite wierd once you think about it. Yongguk could have any favorite meal in the whole world, and he choses this one. Shrugging at the fact and praising the cheap and quick meal, Daehyun cooked some ramen. He finished soon after, setting a bowl in front of Yongguk and sitting next to him.
"Do you want me to wait for you to be done or should I just read?" Daehyun questioned, picking up the book regardless and flipping to chapter 7.
"Go ahead and read on." Yongguk mumbled with noodles hanging off his lips. Daehyun chuckled, before clearing his throat.
"Chapter 7: First Cold.
The past couple chapters have been pretty happy memories, huh? So you would think this one would be happy too? You're right, yet so wrong. Sickness, although sometimes harmless, is no joking matter. So when Daehyun was in bed with his first cold, I was pampering him more than usual. Of course being the man Dae was, he pushed me away and told me he was fine.
What he didn't know, was that he wasn't fine. He kept getting worse. I finally got him to agree to a doctor's appointment, sacrificing my own money to buy him cheesecake for the rest of our lives. Anyways, when we arrived at the hospital, Daehyun was subjected to a series of tests; the normal kind. They took blood, a pee sample, checked his blood pressure, and gave him a small physical examine. After, they told us to come back in a week and if things were still unsolved, they would run more tests.
It felt like forever, but finally a week passed by and we dropped ourselves off at the doctor's." Daehyun stopped reading and glanced up at his friend, who was slurping the ramen juice from his bowl.
"Daehyun, keep reading. Don't let me distract you." Yongguk's gummy smile didn't settle Daehyun's nerves like it usually did.
"Hyung... what happened at the hospital? ...Is... Is there something wrong with me...?" The elder's eyes filled with sympathy instantly.
"Dae... just r-"
"Why can't you just tell me?!" Daehyun yelled, feeling frustrated. He wanted to remember. He wanted to know what happened.
"Read the book, Daehyun." Yongguk said in a calm voice.
"Fuck this book!" Daehyun launched the book on the other side of the room. "Fuck this! I'll go talk to Youngjae myself." Daehyun grumbled, storming to his room to put on some better clothes, a coat, and his shoes.
"Daehyun, are you sure you want to see him? I don't want you to get hurt." Yongguk warned, but didn't try and stop the younger.
"I'm just getting more and more frustrated with not knowing what happened in our relationship, Yongguk. Why does it hurt my head so much and why, for the love of him, can't I remember?" Daehyun was now on the verge of tears, dropping his phone and keys on his bed.
"Daehyun, I'm telling you the easiest way to find out all of this, is to read the book. If you go to Youngjae, he will tell you the same thing. That's why he wrote it for you, so he wouldn't have to say it in person. Going to the doctor's would be another solution, I suppose. But it will take time for the results to come back, where as you could have the book done in a couple days." Yongguk explained.
Daehyun sighed and looked at Yongguk. Yongguk sounded like he was speaking from experience. It scared Daehyun a little bit, to the point where his head was full of why's, what's, and when's.
"How many times have you said this to me? Why does it sound like what your saying is rehearsed? What happened to me...? What's... what's wrong with me, Yongguk?" The tears were back in the younger's eyes, before any question could be answered, let alone completed.
"How about, I read the book to you?" Yongguk suggested, leaving the room to find the book that was thrown not too long ago. He picked it up and made his way back to Daehyun, sitting him down on the bed and opening to where they had left off. "Are you ready?" He questioned. Daehyun only nodded, leaning his head on Yongguk's shoulder. The elder smiled, before clearing his throat and continuing the chapter.
"We sat in the waiting room for twenty minutes, though it felt like two hours. The nurse almost didn't let me in, but I told her I was his brother. She didn't really buy it, but let me in anyways. We waited for ten more minutes once inside the room. The doctor finally came in with a huge smile.
'Daehyun! It's so good to see you again. How you been?' The man sat down on his spinning chair and grabbed Daehyun's file.
'Just fine, I suppose.' Dae shrugged.
'Well, let's see what the tests resulted in.' The elder opened the folder and looked through the notes, his face slowly showing a frown.
'Is everything ok?' I spoke up.
'Actually, not really. I mean Daehyun is fine, he won't die, but he does have a serious condition.' Those words made me feel relieved, yet terrified."
"A condition, hyung?" Daehyun interrupted the story.
"Yeah, Daehyun, but let me finish, ok?" Daehyun nodded, sitting quietly on the bed.
"I felt Daehyun tense next to me, but I didn't know how to really comfort him.
'Daehyun suffers from short term memory loss. It's very odd, but I believe his memory loss is about 6 months apart. You see, he remembers everything, before whatever happened to cause his brain damage; he wasn't born this way. After 6 months of knowing someone or doing something, like a job or a girlfriend, he forgets them. He might remember a few things here or there, if he heard them, but other than that he forgets or his brain tells him it ended; like he got fired or was dumped.' I was quite shocked by this news."
"Wait! That... that can't be right! I remember Youngjae, I remember him!" Daehyun bursted into tears.
"You started to really remember him after you read his name on the book, right? And as you started to read the book, you remember the first of all the times he wrote about, plus the others quite like it." Yongguk responded.
"What happened, Yongguk? Why did Youngjae and I break up?" Daehyun begged the elder to just tell him.
"Daehyun, read the next chapter." Yongguk sighed, handing him the book. "It explains everything you need to know." Yongguk got up from the bed and headead towards the door. "I'll let you read it alone, but I'll just be in the living room watching some T.V. If you need me, just let me know, arrasso?" Daehyun slowly nodded, so that elder could leave him to his thoughts.
