*Mary-Lou's POV*

Monday again. Usually I'd be half asleep as I get ready for school butnot today. Susan and I were seated on the over clean floor of our old fashioned room, discussing about the debate. Yup, we were still going, despite our mother's lecturing and grounding us. We were wearing matching grey button down shirts and full length black leggings with our hair tied into two ponytails, hanging over our shoulders. Of course we had to miss school, but we made sure our parents were busy. I gave her a call from another phone, pretending as if I was a patient in need of emergency help, only from the Expert, far on the outskirts of the city. And our father? Well he pretty much didn't give a damn. I felt a rebellious spirit, rushing through my veins. I hated this place almost as much as I hated my life! I was sick and tired of it, it was time to scratch our lives and write a new one.

We walked all the way to the university where the debate was being held. "We'll win it" I said confidently as we entered the gate. After all, we always won a prize when textbooks were related. Yes, we were big, big nerds. "Then we'll leave. Out of this hell- ish place, onceand for all." I re- adjusted my hair making it even more messy. "You know she loved us right?" Susan said quietly. "That was just one of the many lies she told us." I replied firmly as we signed our names on the registration list. "What if it was one of the rare truths she told?" "Stop it. If she loved us, she'd let us have what we want. This is what we want! A new life. Now come on the debate is going to start."

It was over. I took deep breaths, counted till 10 and crossed my fingers. "We did well right?" Susan asked me for reassurance. "I guess so" We were seated on rickety chairs in front of the minimal audience that kept silent. One of the three judges, with curly orange hair came to the podium with some papers and envelopes. "Today's debate was clearly a good one. However, only one team can win.." His voice was gruff. I squeezed my eyes shut and said a silent prayer. "Mary-lou Shephard and Susan Shephard! We have our winners." The audience gave a polite applause, but I didn't care. We scurried onto the stage eager for our prizes. "Here is one million for you two to share. Use it wisely." The judge said and handed me a large envelope. I was smiling so much my cheeks ached. "And a scholarship in one of the best schools in New York! Avara High School. Congratulations."

We nearly ran home in excitement. "Oh my lord! This is AMAZING! We can finally change our home, ourselves change everything!" Susan cheered and skipped along the pavement. "Yes we can. Forgot to mention we'll be needing new names if we want a new life." I saidand held the envelope with the money close to me. "Hmmm... I've always liked Kiara..I'll go with that. You?" Susan said. I was quiet for a moment. A name that would define me forever. I thought for another moment. "Alexis" I smiled. "Alexis Ren"
