Chapter dedicated to RukaiyyaAnas

"Hey how about this one?" Maafy waved a printed blue hijab in front of me. Yes you are right. We are shopping with Caroline. And yes. You are right again. We are buying Hijabs for her. Although she won't be wearing it to cover her head but just to cover the scar on her neck. So she'll be wearing it like a scarf.

"It's gorgeous. But shouldn't you be asking Caroline? " I asked looking for our new friend.

"Actually I thought we could buy one for each other as well?" She shrugged.

"Hmm...okay.. but this one suits the maxi dress your mum brought for you, doesn't it?" I stroked the fabric.

"Yeah...." she dragged and stared off into space.

She agreed on taking it and we started searching one for me. Meanwhile, Caroline was busy arguing with the sales girl, because she wouldn't show her the nice Hijabs and instead wasting her precious time.

"She reminds me of your mum" I nudged Maafy, pointing at Caroline who looked like she would pull out the lady's hair. Maafroza rolled her eyes and I chuckled.

I looked around the store and walked towards the place with dark coloured Hijabs. They looked perfect to me. I'm not a big fan of bright colours. They hurt my eyes.

Just then, my phone buzzed and I stared at the dozens of missed calls from my dear brother.
I picked the call and held the phone to my ears.

"Assalamwaalaikum Zakar-"

Before I could greet him properly, someone ran into me, knocking me out.

"Hey! Watch it!" I cradled my phone and stood up, dusting my abaya, ready to smash the person.

Just kidding.

" oh it's you!" I stared at the person in front of me. Chris. He didn't seemed to surprised though.

"Yeah me. Listen I have something for you." Said Chris, seemingly in a hurry.

"Yea-wait what? Why would you-" before I could complete my sentence, he grabbed my hand and slid something on it. I couldnt comprehend anything because me hand was burning from his touch.

Not literally.

I came out of my trance, all ready to slap the guy when he said," Don't remove it if you love your God!" And rushed away.

What the flying popsicle?

If I love my God? Of course I love my God.

Surely, he's a weirdo.

I stared at the shiny silver, of course not real silver, bracelet in my hand. It had a lot of studded diamonds on it. It was simple but beautiful. And I was confused. Could this guy get anymore weird? I was pondering on whether to keep it or hide it in Zakaria's bedroom so I can bring it up later when we fight, accusing him of letting a girl in his room, when I realised that Zakariah was still on the line.

I was about to speak when the call ended. I looked at the screen and was going to tap on the call button when I heard Caroline screech.

I think everyone enjoys interrupting me.

I rushed to Caroline, picking up a brown scarf for myself on the way, tossing seven dollars to the sales girl.

I couldn't stop the laughter that escaped my mouth at the scene. In front of me, Maafroza and the manager were pulling off Caroline and the sales girl off of each other.

"She called me a b-"

"Okay that's enough both of you! I'll apologize on each other's behalf. We got our 'ijabs and paid for 'em and now it's time to head home!" Maafroza sang and dragged us out of the shop.

We walked together, chatting, till the bus station and took our buses home, bidding goodbye to each other.

I stepped out of the bus and crossed the street to get to our house. I was deep in thoughts about Maafroza's engagement. How would she explain everything to her mum? What if they disagree and force her to marry? How would Zak feel? What is the little hope that somehow Maafy won't get married disappears into thin hair? My baby brother won't be able to bear the heartbreak. How am I goin-

All of a sudden, my thoughts were cut off by a sudden jerk in my arm, followed by dizziness, which increased when someone pressed a piece of cloth on my nose, blocking the way for fresh air. I felt my knees going weak and I fell. My forhead collided with the headlight of a car beside me and the last thing I heard was a familiar male voice muttering,
"Shit."

I'm 99.9 percent sure there was chloroform in that cloth,

I thought as darkness filled my blurry vision.
