Chapter 26:
I still remember when Jenna first told me she was a lesbian.
I looked at my phone and smiled. I'd been texting Liam for an hour now. Last night, he had taken me to the movies, for our first date. It had been perfect. Kya came over and helped me pick out my outfit before Liam and his brother, our ride, arrived. When we got to the movies, he let me pick the movie and snacks, and he had held my hand the entire time. When he'd asked me out last week I couldn't believe it. The hottest guy in the sophomore class wanted to go on a date with me.
I quickly typed a text back before my mom could ask who it was. My parents and I were watching a movie in the living room. I looked at my parents, cuddling on the couch, and sighed. They were so in love. They had met when she came into the hospital with Grandpa. Dad had been the one to do Grandpa's checkup and during the checkup, he saw my mom. Three years later, they were married and two after that, I was born. I just want someone to look at me like my dad looks at my mom.
I jumped at the sound of someone knocking on the door rapidly. Weird, it's almost eleven o'clock, I thought. My mom climbed off the couch to go answer the door. A moment later, she walked back into the living room, a crying Jenna tucked under her arm. I jumped off the loveseat and jogged over to them. "Do you know what's wrong with her?" my mom mouthed over Jenna's head. I shook my head at her and grabbed Jenna's hand, pulling her into a hug. "You wanna go upstairs and talk?" I whispered to her. She nodded, wiping her hands across her tearstained cheeks.
"We'll be in my room, if you need me." I told my parents, leading Jenna towards the stairs. "Alright, sweetheart." my dad said, concern plastered across his face. I lead Jenna up to my room and closed the door behind her. We sat on my bed and I waited as she cried, hugging one of my throw-pillows. After twenty minutes, Jenna finally calmed down enough to speak.
"It was my dad." she said quietly, tears still slowly hitting my pillow. "What did your dad do?" I asked her slowly. Jenna's dad was the town alcoholic. He had gotten Jenna's mom pregnant at sixteen and married her. Eight years later, they had Jenna's little brother Aiden. Jenna's mom was the sweetest person you could ever meet, and worked at the local diner, but Jenna's dad was different. He had dropped out of college when Jenna's Mom got pregnant, and from what I could tell, was a good dad until five years ago. Nobody really knows what happened, but Jenna's dad started drinking, swearing, and acting out violently. He's even started a few bar fights in town.
"He was watching the news and the news started covering th-" she broke off, new tears swimming in her grey eyes. "the gay pride parade, downtown. And he just went off. He-" she cleared her throat, but kept going. "He threw his beer bottle at the t.v. and started yelling about how all gay people should be killed. Then I saw little Aiden. He was-" she broke off, a sob stealing her voice. I grabbed her hand and held it, silently showing my support. "He was staring at Dad and crying. He didn't understand what Dad meant, or anything, but he hates it when Dad starts yelling and acting crazy. I made eye contact with Aiden and something in me snapped. I walked up to Dad and starting yelling at him for saying stuff like that in front of Aiden. That's when Dad.... He hit me." Jenna tears starting falling faster, and I squeezed her hand as she fought back the sobs. "He punched me in the stomach, and sent me into the wall. He started yelling again, calling me a faggot for defending gay people. That's when my mom walked in the front door. She stared at my dad and I. Then she ran into the kitchen and grabbed the phone. She.... she called the police but while she was on the phone my dad took the phone from her and started hitting her, yelling about her calling the police on her own husband." Jenna sat up straighter, a steel edge cutting into her words.
"This calm just came over me. Seeing him standing over my mom, kicking, and yelling at her. So I grabbed Aiden and ran him to his room. I put him in his closet and told him to stay there. Then I grabbed the shotgun from my parents room..." she trailed off, her face growing pale but her voice growing stronger. "I don't know what I thought I was going to do with it. I ran back into the kitchen and I pointed it at him. He saw me and started laughing saying I would never do anything with it, but I did. I hit him over the head with the butt of the gun and he just fell. I heard the sirens a minute later and ran. I don't know why, I just did. I ran until I ended up outside your door." she finished. As she had talked, her tears had dried.
"Jenna we need to tell my mom, she can help." I told her, pulling into a tight hug. "I know and I want to, but Ava, I think my dad was right." she said, pulling back from the hug. I shook my head, hard. "No. It's never right to hit your spouse or your kids." I told her, angry she even thought that was okay. "No. No. That's not what I meant. I meat that I-" she paused, taking a deep breath. "I think he was right about me being a lesbian." she whispered. I watched shame creep across her features. I stood up and pulled her up with me. "No, Jenna, no. Never be ashamed of yourself." I told her, angrily. She finally met my eyes. "Jenna, you should never be ashamed of yourself after what you've done and been through. You are the bravest person I know. Never, ever, forget that." I told her, devastated over what she had been through tonight.
-Present-
Jenna told my mom everything later that night, Jenna's dad was put in custody, and her mom was hospitalized for her injuries. Jenna's mom decided to press charges against her dad and Jenna's dad was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with no possible parole.
It's been two weeks since the night Jenna finally confessed to me that she has feelings for Kya. The next day she told Kya everything, including her feelings. Kya took it all in and then surprised all of us, a week later, by asking Jenna to prom. Jenna, of course, said yes. A few days after that, Trevor asked Lilli to prom by setting up a scavenger hunt around town. The twins birthday also came and went, which involved a very happy Zander and Lilli. Zander absolutely loved the basketball and couldn't stop asking me about how I got it. Lilli also loved her purse and her new car. Lilli and Zander's parents got her a new Honda for her birthday.
Prom is next week and Zander still hasn't shown any interest in asking me or going. Everytime I ask him he just says he might not go and changes the subject. I'm honestly starting to think he isn't going to ask me.
I jumped when my phone vibrated beside me. It was a text from Trevor. I unlocked my phone and quickly read the message. "I need advice about Lilli. Can you come over?" it said. I quickly texted him yes and grabbed my coat. I walked across the street and knocked on his door. I waited for ten minutes, but nobody came. I walked around to the backyard, and dropped my phone in shock of what I found.
