CHAPTER 27:
When I was little, I always thought when I got older that I would meet my own prince charming, and that we would ride off on his white horse into the sunset. The first thing I did when I actually got my prince charming was laugh.
---
When I turned the corner into Trevor's backyard, the first thing I saw was a bright pink bouncy castle, in the middle of Trevor's backyard. People started coming out of it when I looked in that direction. Trevor, Lilli, Jenna, and Kya all climbed out. The last to come out was Zander. When I saw what he was wearing, loud, belly, laughter came out of my mouth, without my permission. He was wearing a prince charming costume, complete with a golden crown on his head. He held a sign that read "Be My Princess At Prom?".
Lilli pulled out her phone as Zander started walking towards me. When he reached me he knelt down in front of me and sat the sign down on the grass. He grabbed my hand and looked up at me. "Ava, will you go to prom with me?" he asked, his blue eyes shining. "Yes." I told him and he stood up and kissed me. In that moment, the world shrunk and it was just me and Zander. My hands found their way up to the base of his neck and tangled themselves in his hair. Zander pulled me tighter, his hands running up and down my back.
We finally broke the kiss when Kya and Lilli started shouting "Get it girl!" repeatedly. I smiled and rolled my eyes at them, but my glare was quickly torn from them. Zander had swooped me up into his arms, bridal style, and was carrying me towards the bouncy castle. He laughed at the annoyance on my face. "What?" he asked. "I hate being carried." I said flatly. "Too bad. The prince always carries his love off into the sunset." he replied smugly. "Oh. I didn't realize the bouncy castle had suddenly turned into a huge, blazing hot, ball of gas." I told him, in mock confusion. "Smartass." he said, rolling his eyes. "You know you love me." I responded, smirking. "Yea, I do. Which is why, even though it was a pain in the ass, I finished fixing your truck." he told me. He grinned at the happy smile that emerged on my face.
He finally put me back on the ground in front of the bouncy castle. Immediately Kya, Jenna, and Lilli pulled me into a group hug. We broke apart and I stared at them with fake annoyance. "How could you keep all this from me? I was starting to think I would be the only one not asked to prom?" I asked them, my voice stern. "Zander made us all swear we wouldn't even hint at anything." Lilli said, slight annoyance evident in her tone. Suddenly Kya grabbed me by my shoulders. "Who cares now? I've got bigger news!" she half-shouted at me. "What?" I asked her hesitantly. "My mom is closing down shop tomorrow and we're getting the whole day to pick out your prom outfit." she said, a huge smile plastered across her face. "Okay. Okay." I said, chuckling at her excitement. "Good luck." Jenna whispered to me before being pulled away by Kya.
"I can't believe Kya got her mom to close down her boutique for you." Lilli exclaimed beside me. "Well I was gonna have to go at some point. It is the only boutique in town." I told her, laughing.
---
I woke up to my phone ringing. I groaned and answered without looking at the screen. "Ava! You better have your ass up and ready in fifteen minutes, or I'm gonna kick it." was all Kya said before hanging up.
"Shit." I muttered, rolling out of bed and stumbling toward the bathroom. Fifteen minutes later, I walked outside as Kya honked her horn impatiently. I climbed in the passenger side of her little Fiat. "You ready for a day of dress shopping, picking out shoes, and accessories? Cute outfit by the way." Kya said as soon as I sat down. I shook my head, smiling, and looked down at my outfit. I had quickly thrown on jeans, a dark grey long sleeve shirt, high-tops, and wrapped my hair in a bun.
Ten minutes later, we pulled into the parking lot of the Lissie Boutique. Kya parked the car and we started walking towards Kya's mom, who was unlocking the French style doors. "Hi, Mrs. Wilson." I called out. She turned and smiled at me. "Ava." she said, wrapping me in a hug. She released me and Kya and I followed her into the boutique. Kya immediately took off, half-running, toward the formal dress section of the shop. I exchanged a knowing glance with Mrs. Wilson before following her between the aisles of shirts, pants, and dresses.
When Mrs. Wilson and I finally found Kya she was grabbing her second dress off a rack. "Kya, I thought you already got your dress." Mrs. Wilson said, her tone slightly scolding. Kya rolled her eyes. "Sorry y'all. I'm just really excited." she said. "For what?" I asked, laughing. "To see the look on Zander's face when he sees you of course." Kya said slyly. I rolled my eyes as she shoved the dresses in my arms and pushed me into a dressing room.
I pulled the first dress over my head. It was long and coral, with silver embroidery down one side. I sighed and stepped out of the dressing room. Kya and her mom had identical looks on their faces. "Spin." Kya commanded. I slowly turned in a circle. "I like the style, but not the color." Mrs. Wilson commented. "Yea. I agree." Kya said. "I'll third that." I told them and stepped back into the dressing room. I yanked off the dress and grabbed the other one. "Oh no." I whispered. Kya had picked up a short, green dress. I groaned and slid it on. I looked in the mirror and sighed.
I walked back into the waiting section of the dressing room and was met with laughter. "I'm so sorry Ava." Kya said, between breaths of laughter. I scowled and looked at Mrs. Wilson. She was faintly smiling behind her hand. A long time ago, I learned that short dresses didn't mix well with my height. The dress was so short on me that you could almost see my underwear. I turned around and went back into the dressing room.
I was in the middle of taking off the dress when I heard a gasp and some whispering. I poked my head out of the dressing room to see Mrs. Wilson walking toward me with a dress. I grinned when I saw it and nodded, taking the dress from her. I closed the door back and put the dress on. I twirled in the mirror and smiled, before stepping from the dressing room. Kya and her mom smiled and clapped when they saw me. I looked in the mirror on the wall and knew I had found my dress. "It's perfect." I breathed.
