CHAPTER 30:

I woke up and felt a tear slide down the side of my face. Friday, after graduation, Zander had gotten a phone call from the University of Kentucky. They wanted him to come early to finalize his scholarship, meet the rest of the basketball team, and begin practice. They had asked him to be there by Tuesday, meaning he had to leave today. I closed my eyes, gathering myself and my emotions, before wiping off the tear and getting up.

I quickly showered and pulled on a tank top and jean shorts. I went downstairs to find my mom already gone, but my dad sitting at the table with his coffee. I silently walked into the kitchen and poured myself a cup before sitting down across from him. He sat down the newspaper he'd been reading to look at me. "Today's the day, isn't it?" he asked and I nodded, knowing what he meant. He sighed, his eyes telling me he could see the pain I was feeling. "I'll be honest, I don't know what you're going through; I meet your mother in college and never had to let go of her. However, I see the way he looks at you and you look at him. I've delivered many babies to parents that never shared that look, and I know that's a rare thing. So, I'll only say this. If you and Zander truly belong together, you'll find each other, either again in this life or the next." I tried to smile at him but failed, my heart breaking at his words. He simply stood, kissed my head, and left, knowing I needed to be alone.

Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into Zander's driveway to see him packing up his jeep. I took a deep breath, parked, and walked up the drive to meet him. "Hey." he said, turning his head to see me as he closed the trunk. I gave him my best smile as he opened his arms for me to walk into. "Where's your family?" I asked him as his arms tightened around my body. "My parents said goodbye last night because they had an early meeting this morning. Lilli just left for Trevor's after making me a 'goodbye breakfast'." he said, both of us smiling as Lilli's attempt at saying goodbye.

I backed up a step, still holding onto Zander's hand. "I guess it's my turn." I joked. Zander made a sound like a laugh but choked on it. I laughed at it and ended up making us both smile. My smile faded when I saw all the boxes piled in the back of the jeep. "Packed up, huh?" I asked, silently hoping there was more boxes. He nodded, sliding his hands into his pockets as we lapsed into a silence.

I cleared my throat before the tears could return and hugged him. He pulled my chin up with his hand and kissed me softly. He broke the kiss and opened the backseat door. It became harder to hold back the tears as I saw what he pulled out: the hoodie he was wearing the night we met. He smiled slightly as if he remembered it too and handed me the hoodie. "I want you to have this. It'll remind you of me when you see it." he told me, his blue eyes starting to shine. "I could never forget you. You're my first love." I confided, holding the hoodie against my chest. "You're mine too." was all he said, angrily wiping away a tear. "Hey, stop." I told him, grabbing his hands in my own.

I took a death breath, preparing for what I'd been planing to say for quite a while. "I love you and because of that I'm letting you go." I told him, his eyes flashing at my words. "I want you to go to college and not let me hold you back. I want you to find the person you're meant to be with, me or not." I said, lowering his hands. He opened his mouth to say something but I cut him off with a kiss, grabbed his car keys from his pocket, and handed them to him. He looked from the keys to my face and knew what I meant by it.

I walked with him around the car to the driver's seat; watched him sit and start the car. He rolled down the window, pulled me in for one last kiss, and whispered "I love you." against my lips before backing out of the driveway.

I waited for the jeep to turn off the street before I let the first tear fall.
