I wiped the dirt from my eye. I was oddly early for class, the only people here the substitute teacher, Osana and I. I scanned the room, my eyes meeting Osana's... d-did she just... smile at me? I've known her almost as long as Taro Yamada has, an upperclassman known often as Senpai, and not once has she smiled at me. I smiled back, waiting for her to say something. Her mouth opened as an incredibly loud foot step like practically shook the school. I quickly looked out the window to see an enormous, naked Yui Rio followed by the other students. Without control, my neck gave out and my head slammed into my desk, waking me up from my weird, Attack on Titan-esque dream.
"You idiot, some of us are trying to learn!"
Osana was just her regular self again, the familiarity satisfying. There was something strange about how comforting Osana's attitude was, I'd grown accustomed to it. When she scolded me, it almost felt as if she was doing me a favour.
"Just do us a favour and stop snoring, baka!"
Osana seemed to be especially aggressive today. It gave the impression that something was happening, something that made her angry or high-strung.
"Is something wrong, Osana-chan?"
Her eyes widened as if she had seen a ghost. I guess she didn't expect that I'd see through her, despite knowing her for so many years.
"Uh, of course not! Just, um... I need to ask something."
I tilted my head a little and nodded, a smile slowly reaching across my face. She turned a little red and began to look very nervous, even scared.
"D-don't give me that look, dummy! Meet me behind the school-"
She practically yelled, I'm sure the class across the hall heard. The entire class turned around and stared at us in the back row.
"Miss, I'll see you after class."
She may have just been the substitute teacher for that week, but she showed authority in her voice. Osana's mouth shut rapidly, moments later she glared into my eyes coldly.
"5:50pm, don't be late."
I smiled again and went back to being bored by the lesson. I knew that in an hour school would be over finally.
I raced to the back of the school, supplies escaping my bag and scattering across the field. I was a few minutes late because Ayano-chan asked me to go ask Budo-kun who he had a crush on. I finally tracked him down and he didn't even answer me! It was 5:58 and I knew Osana was strict about me showing up on time. Finally, I saw her by the sakura blossom pacing around the tree anxiously. I approached her, panting, as she sighed.
"You always keep me waiting, stupid! This is important, take things more seriously!"
"I'm really sorry, Osana."
I truly, honestly, really meant it. Our eyes met, like a scene straight out of a romance book. Her face softened, her cheeks turning more red by the second. She looked adorable, a small smile meeting my lips once again. And for the first time ever... she smiled back.
"Do you believe the myth about the cherry tree? When it's 6pm..."
She trailed off a little bit, her eyes traveling to the running track. Of course I knew the story, the entire school did.
"It doesn't have to be a myth."
Her eyes darted to mine, she inhaled deeply. I bit my lip a little, unsure of what would happen next. Her arm wrapped around my neck and we shared a gentle kiss. After a moment, she focused deeply on my collarbone.
"Baka..." She smiled.
