I jogged up the school stairway to the roof, avoiding spilling my lunch. I looked over the rooftop before making my way to an empty bench, the others unoccupied as I was unusually early. I rested my head against the wall, noticing a peculiar student with a rather hostile appearance. Without making eye contact, she sat beside me and stared into space.
"Erm... hello?"
She sat motionless, focused. I frowned and turned away, her voice quick and expressionless.
"I have one purpose, she'll be here in approximately 9 seconds and disturbances are disruptive to my work."
...What? She sounded like a robot. Osana marched by the two of us, muttering to herself.
"Stupid senpai, I could be eating ramen with Saiko-chan right now."
Ayano followed shortly after, twitching ever so slightly. The girl stood up immediately and swiftly removed a knife from her stocking. I scooted away from her, awe struck and terrified. It all happened so quickly, Ayano lunged at Osana. Osana met a devastating end as the girl attempted to attack Ayano, who slipped away just before the blade met her skin.
"Damn it."
The girl angrily exhaled and followed the murderous female. What just happened?! Osana was gone, I fell to my knees and began to breathe heavily. Despite my better judgement, I felt I should follow them. If I was the only one that saw an assassin chasing a psychopath through the school, it forced me to risk my life. I leaped down the stairs and heard a scream, my heart pounding at the incident. Ayano lied on the bloodied floor, the new student wiping her hands together. Without turning back, she spoke in a calm, deep voice.
"My work has been completed. I no longer have a purpose at this school."
I stood confused, the blur of things leaving me in complete confusion.
"Can you explain what just happened, please?"
Her shoulders stiffened, her feet shifting. She sigh and looked back at me expressionless. She told me soft nothings, about our safety and such. She turned and attempted to exit the school... my hand catching the back of her uniform.
"Wait... I don't want you to leave. I'm still unsure."
She smirked and scruffed up my hair. She closed her eyes, hand still on my head.
"I can stay for a minute, no more."
I lowered my head onto her shoulder, my forehead against her comfortable top. I was still traumatized, the explanation had not stopped me from breaking down. I began to sob right by the main entrance onto her, luckily everyone was still at lunch. She placed her chin on my back, her breathing soothing me.
"I know you aren't a bad person. Protecting us... I just wish-"
I wiped my nose on my sleeve, her chin rising. Her eyes were curious.
"I just wish things were less complicated."
She gripped my elbow tightly, our eyes making contact. Although her gaze felt stern, I knew she was thinking about my words.
"The mind needs challenges to prove strength."
It was a whisper, but it spoke to me. She pressed her nose to mine and left without a trace. Funny how an assassin of all people changed my life for the better, and it only took 7 words.
