love no longer- jake riley

Jake was inside the cordon, in the hospital, I was worried because Lex was still giving him orders to deal with infected people.

Thankfully Jake was careful, he called me everyday, until all the cell service went out, he was only able to radio Lex now.

Some days Lex let me get in a quick chat with Jake, they were short, he'd tell me how he was doing, I learned he's been helping a teacher who went to the hospital for a field trip, just on the wrong day.

I was proud of him, upholding the oath he took, continued to be selfless and help others in need, I loved him, though I was soon to find out he'd fallen for somebody else.

"Hey Jake." I smiled to myself as Lex walked away to give us a tiny bit of privacy over the hand held radio in my hand.

"Hey y/n." He said quietly, he sounded scared, sad.

"Jake what's wrong?" I asked worried he'd got infected.

But it was only his heart that did.

"I need to tell you something." He whispered, oh gosh, he was infected.

"You can tell me anything." I said, worry lacing my words.

"I don't think we can be together anymore." He said quietly and my heart stopped, my whole body turned numb, but I had to say something.

"Where is this coming from?" I asked, my mouth and throat becoming dry.

"I just, I think I love somebody else." He whispered.

"In the middle of a deadly outbreak, really Jake?" I asked quietly, I felt tears begging to fall from my eyes.

"I know, but I just can't explain it, she makes me happy." He said and I nodded, not like he could see.

"I understand Jake, if that's how you feel I'm not going to stop it, I hope you have a great life with her, don't worry I'll take my things so when you get back I'll be completely gone." I said, smiling as tears fell from my eyes.

"Wait y/n, I-" he tried to say.

"Goodbye Jake." I interrupted and turned off the radio.

Lex turned around when I approached him, his face softened when he saw tears running down my face, leaving black streaks on my skin.

"Are you ok? What did he say?" Lex asked and I shook my head in disbelief.

"H- he broke up with me, said he fell in love with somebody else." I said and let out a small sob.

Lex took me in his arms and I laid my head on his shoulder, we stood like this for awhile before I pulled away, he placed his hands on my shoulders and looked into my eyes.

"He'll realize he made a mistake, I promise you that." Lex said and I shook my head.

"He seemed pretty confident about his feelings, I trust he makes the right decision, even if that is getting rid of me." I say and Lex nods understandingly.

"Hey, I'll see you around?" I asked Lex and he nodded, I walked back to Jake and I's house, taking extra boxes from the garage, starting to pack my things.

As I looked around the house, tears began to sting my eyes again, the house I moved into my first love with, 3 years we've been together.

3 years I guess were a waste of his time, 3 years he'll never get back, and 3 years I'll never forget.

I grabbed a picture off of the coffee table, Jake and I, in the snow, he had just threw a snowball at me, Lex and Jana at our house for a mini Christmas get together.

I threw the picture at the wall, screaming in anger, the frame and glass shattered against the wall, sending shards and wood everywhere.

He had met this girl, about 17 days ago? I've known him the majority of my life.

I screamed again, letting out a choked sob at the end, I cried until there were knocks on the door.

I wiped my face and opened the door, Lex standing there, he looked at me and frowned.

"Your neighbors thought you were being killed." He said and stepped into the house looking at the shattered glass.

"Other than my heart being crushed and ripped into a million tiny little pieces I'm fine." I say and grab a broom to clean the mess.

"Would you like to stay at my place so you don't have to be alone?" Lex asked.

"I've been alone for 17 days, I'm sure I'll be fine the rest of my life too." I say and Lex rolls his eyes.

"I'm being serious y/n, do you want to stay with me or not?" Lex says and I think for a second before nodding my head.

"Ok grab some things and lets go." Lex says and I run to my room grabbing some clothes and throwing them in my bag.

Once we got to his house, he showed me the extra bedroom, I thanked him and put my stuff away, changing into my pajamas and getting into bed.

I laid for awhile before my mind wondered to Jake, my eyes began to water again.

I silently cried for a few hours before exhaustion started to pull my body into sleeping mode.

I closed my eyes and tried to breathe slowly but from crying I couldn't catch my breath, I began to hiccup, finally falling asleep.

The last thought on mind before falling asleep was Jake, with someone new, happy.
