KimberlyThe pep rally starts at seven and is held on the football field. It's hot and humid outside, and my hair is already turning back to its natural curl pattern at the roots.
Students walk around and fill the bleachers while music blasts through speakers. Chairs are lined up facing the field for the football players with the band lined up behind. The cheerleaders stand at the bottom of the bleachers to the left while the rest of the dance team and I stand to the right.
The pep rally is kicked off by the cheerleaders performing first to get the crowd hyped, and welcoming the football players. The cheerleaders tumble across the field, do toe touches, make pyramids, and motions with the pom-poms. The crowd cheers them on and scream loudly as the football players trail out, wearing a white button-down shirt with the school initials OHS on the right side in red with crisp khaki pants. The cheerleaders return to their spot, then it's our turn to perform.
"Alright y'all, we're up! Let's go out there and kill it!" Our captain, Leiya, exclaims. I inhale glancing over at Isaiah. He's talking and laughing with other football players, his dimples showing.
I feel butterflies in my stomach as we walk to the middle of the field and take our place. Why am I so nervous dammit?
My mind is racing as a million and one thoughts flow through my head. 'Don't forget I'm watching' his voice plays in my head over and over again. He knew exactly what he was doing with that sexy ass smirk and ...What am I thinking? Kimberly, just stop. God, I know this boy is nothing but trouble.
I look over to Nadia. She smiles crossing her fingers and arms around her chest; it's been our good luck signal since we both started dancing together. I do it back as the band began to play and we start our routine.
The pep rally ends about forty-five minutes after we finish. The band continued to play, the crowd interacted in games, and our principal, Mr. Thompson, spoke to everyone about his excitement for the new school year.
I meet Nadia, Ty, and Joshua in front of the school once the pep rally is over and we grab our things.
"We can take my car downtown." Joshua offers walking over to us.
"Alright. What time?" I ask throwing my bag over my shoulder, sweat dripping from my face.
I'm distracted when I spot Isaiah walking over to us. He comes and stands beside Joshua. I look back and forth between them waiting for an explanation.
"Oh, yeah. Nadia, Isaiah. Vice Versa. Kimberly-"
"We've all met," I interrupt Joshua's introduction.
"Oh, right. I forgot," he smirks, rubbing his chin. "If y'all don't mind, I invited Isaiah to join us," he informs us. I know that stupid look on Joshua's face all too well. Something is going on, we've been friends way too long for me not to notice.
"Don't we normally-"
"No! We don't mind at all," Nadia answers, intertwining our arms.
"Cool. Y'all be ready by nine," Joshua says. He gives Ty a dap, and he and Isaiah walk off together.
"Alright, girl. I'm going to ride home with Ty. See you in a bit," Nadia tells me walking off with Ty.
