"I'm sure that everything is going to be fine. You're overreacting." Joshua assures me.
"No. The last time my mom told me to make sure I didn't have anything to do at a certain time because she had to talk to me about something important, she told me that she'd be taking on more investigations! And the time before that ...she told me-"
"Calm down, Kimberly." He chuckles.
When my mom texted me this morning telling me to cancel any plans I may have had for dinner tonight because we need to talk, my anxiety level rose. Those kinds of texts never end well between us, and my mind started thinking of hundreds of scenarios, none of which end well.
I thought talking to Joshua would relieve some of the stress building in my chest, so I came to his house in hopes of doing just that but he isn't doing a very good job at comforting me and now I'm wishing I would have waited for Nadia to get off from work.
"You don't get it." I ly back on his bed and trace the lines of his plaid comforter.
"Yeah, I do. I understand why you'd be stressed and all." He shrugs, rolling on deodorant. "I just don't get why you just automatically assume it's something bad." He takes a seat on the edge of his bed and slips on his shoes. I sit there, speechless, not knowing how to respond to that. I do always assume that it's something bad. I don't know why but I do.
A soft knock sounds from the door, pulling me clear of my thoughts. I sit up as the door opens and Joshua's mom appears from the other side.
"Hey." She smiles warmly at me.
"Hey, Mrs. Daniel." I wave at her. Joshua stands up from the bed and adjusts his T-shirt.
"I just got home from the store and was going to make some lunch. Did you guys want some?" She looks between Joshua and I. I swear this lady is always cooking. As if she doesn't cook at her restaurant enough, she cooks at her house just as much.
"Sure." I answer at the same time Joshua rudely says, "We were about to leave." I glare at Joshua as his mother's smile fades into a frown.
"What?" He breathes. "We have to be to practice in forty minutes, and we still have to go to your house to drop your car off and go pick up Nadia."
"It's okay." His mother smiles. "Maybe another time." Her green eyes meet mine.
"Definitely," I promise her. And with that she exits the room, closing the door behind her. I frown at him as I stand from the bed.
"Don't look at me like that." He rolls his eyes.
"You're so mean to her sometimes."
"I didn't even do anything!" He waves his hands in front of him.
"It was just how you said it," I tell him trying to ignore the obnoxiously loud growling of my stomach.
"You're just worried about eating," he calls me out, and I swat at his arm.
"I haven't eaten all day."
"We'll get something after we drop your car off."
"Okay." I grin as he grabs his keys from the dresser and we start to leave his room.
"Fat ass," He mumbles under his breath.
"I heard you asshole." I push him into the wall and he hits it with a soft thud causing him to erupt with laughter. When we get downstairs to the kitchen, Joshua's dad is kissing his mother.
