Sunday

"Hey. I'm about to head to work." I tell my mom as I grab a apple from the fruit bowl placed on the counter.

"Okay....Oh! I've meaning to ask you. How's the application process going?" Shit. I've been avoiding this conversation.

"I haven't really started. I'm still trying to decide where to apply." And if I should apply. I told her that I would try to keep an open mind about college but I never said I my decision was final.

"Isaiah." She sighs, waking from the kitchen. I follow her into the living room. "We talked about this. This is your future and you promised me that you'd at least try."

"And I am. I just haven't decided the places I want to apply. I'm still doing research and...stuff."

    "Mhm." She glares at me.

"It takes time." I bite into my apple and watch as her face softens and a huge smile covers her face.

"Why don't you ask the girl that you've been studying with to help you? Kimberly, was it?"

"She's uhh..no. She helps enough already with so much and I don't want to-"

She holds her hand in the hair to silence me. "You still like her don't you?"

"Yeah."

"She hasn't told you whether or not she likes you?" She adjusts the pillows on the couch.

"Yeah, remember? I told you we went to dinner and she said she had feelings for me but wanted to keep things friendly because of some things on her past." She turns to me and frowns.

"What the hell is that supposed to mean? Either you like someone or you don't."

"I don't know. And I sure don't spend my free time trying to understand the female mind." I wait until I swallow the remaining apple in my mouth before continuing. "All y'all crazy." I tease.

"Boy. Get your ass to work before I kill you." She laughs. I join her laughter as I tread over to her and place a kiss on her cheek.

"I love you." I tell her.

"I love you."

"Even when I call you crazy?" She swats my arm and I hold it pretending I'm in pain.

"Get." She points to the door.

"See you later mom." I walk over to the door and swing it open.

"Bye boy." I can practically hear her rolling her eyes through her words as I shut the door. I love making her smile even if it's by calling her crazy just to make her laugh. She does have her moments though.

Kimberly

I walk downstairs to find my mom in the kitchen unpacking grocery bags.

"Hey." I bring attention to myself.

"Hey." She looks me up and down, taking in my appearance. "It's one. Did you just get up?"

   "Not exactly."

I've been up since ten but laid in bed up until now just thinking about everything. My mom and this mystery man that she's so fond of. My dad; the man in my life who made me smile constantly yet was taken away from me too soon. Isaiah; the one who, somehow, always seems to say the things that I keep in the back of my mind. My mind is so jumbled and it's getting harder and harder to think straight.
