Kimberly
"Thanks for tonight. I had fun." I turn to Isaiah.
"Clear head?" He smiles.
"Yeah but not for long." I manage to return the gesture. I avoided talking to my mom this morning by leaving for school earlier than usual. I just hadn't processed her finally talking to me about my dad; I still haven't.
"You'll be alright. Peace comes from with in."
"I'll be sure to remember that." I chuckle.
"I'm serious." He licks his lips.
"I'm serious, too." I exhale, looking down at Isaiah's baggy t-shirt and sweatpants on my body. "I'll clean these and give them b-"
"Don't trip. Keep them if you want." He shrugs.
"Wh-," I laugh. "What am I going to do with your clothes?" I furrow my brows.
"You know most people wear clothes." He teases.
"Ha Ha." I roll my eyes before I step out of the car.
"Wait. You never did tell me what was bothering you earlier."
"Do you care?"
"I'm asking aren't I?"
"Dinner. She's going to invite him over for dinner and it's a little ...nerve wracking."
"It'll be fine. You'll be fine."
"Yeah." I nod. "Bye."
"Good night."
I get into my car and wait until Isaiah pulls off before I reach into my dance bag and change into shorts and a t-shirt. I don't need my mon wondering whose clothes I'm wearing plus I can barely think straight with his scent invading my nose and capturing my attention.
When I get inside, I walk to my mom's room and knock on the door before cracking it.
"Hey. I'm home." I peek in.
"Hold on." She whispers into the phone. "Hey. Come in." I slowly walk in and stand in the door way.
"How was your day?" She smiles. It all seems so weird. Seeing her cry yesterday for the first time in years and now smiling at me as if nothing ever happened. It seems like two completely different worlds.
"It was okay." I shrug.
"Why was that?"
"Ma, I'm really tired and have-" I really don't want to talk about how her news has been eating at me all day. I'd like to enjoy my peace of mind for as long as I can.
"Oh. It's okay." She smiles nervously. "So..Kenneth-"
"Kenneth?"
"My uhm...." Of course.
"Right....You're ...boyfriend."
"I invited him over for dinner Wednesday." She walks over to me.
"Oh." My voice fails me.
"You're still okay with meeting him so soon, right? Because you seem like-"
"No, it's fine. I'm fine. Just..."
"Tired." She sighs.
"Yeah." I nod.
"Well go ahead and rest. I'll talk to you in the morning. Good night." She places kiss on my forehead before I turn to leave her room.
"Night." I shut the door behind me. I hear her walk back over to her phone. My mind tells me the walk up the stairs but my feet don't move.
