Chapter Ten

The drive into Forks is quick, and I am fast to find the apartment where I had rented earlier in the day. I quickly empty my belongings into my new rooms and I am quick to put everything in their place. I look around my apartment and I sigh in content. This will be my home from now on, I know I said it wouldn't be forever which is the truth, but I do not plan on returning home anytime soon. Because here, in this small one bedroom apartment, I am safe.

I lay down on my bed, and stare at my blank ceiling. Now that I am alone, fully alone, with no one listening to my thoughts, or watching my future, and no one hearing my every move, I feel at piece. The silence of the room, the soft breathing of those sleeping in the rooms around me, makes me feel human. Something I have not felt in such a long time. I close my eyes slowly, and imagine how it would feel to sleep, and to be in a world where vampires and werewolves do not exist. How much easier would my life be, if that were the case.

I take my phone out of my pocket and message Isabella.

J: Hey Isabella, it's Jasper. Just letting you know that I am no longer staying with my family and I am renting an apartment in town.

I: Hey Jasper. Are you okay? Do you want me to come over?

J: I would like that. I will send you my address.

I: I'll see you soon.

I sit up in my bed. My chest still aches slightly, but it is not as bad as it was before. I cannot help but to smile at the thought of Isabella being here, in this small apartment. I imagine her clothes in my drawers, her toiletries in my bathroom, her scent covering this room. I quickly shake the thoughts out of my head, as a knock sounds on my door. I immediately know who it is.

"It's open," I call out.

Isabella appears and smiles at me before closing the door behind her. "You know Jasper, you should keep your door locked in case someone tries to break in."

I laugh softly at her words. "I am sure if someone breaks in, I will be able to defend myself." Isabella also laughs, and her laugh makes me smile. "So how are you feeling?" Isabella sits down on the bed beside me, taking her shoes off.

"It is my first time being actually alone in over 80 years, so you could say it is a bit strange," I laugh slightly. "But other than that it is okay."

"You know Jasper," Isabella turns to me. "You could've stayed with us. Vic and James are more than happy to take you in and to care for you. They want only the best for you Jasper... I only want the best for you."

"Thank you... Bella," I try the nickname Emmett gave her on my tongue. "But for a little while, I need to test being alone."

"Well Jasper," Isabella runs my back slightly. "I am always going to be here."

"Can I ask you something Bella?" I ask.

"Anything Jasper," she smiles again.

"It is about something Edward said in the forest," I look into her red eyes. "About you loving me."

"I do love you Jasper," Isabella states confidently. "I am not in-love with you, but I do love you."

+_+_+

"The weather today in Forks will be 34 degrees Celsius [93.2 degrees Fahrenheit] and sunny," the lady on the news states. I smirk at Isabella, who lays on my bed with her eyes closed.

"There goes the plan of school today," I laugh. Isabella opens an eye and looks at me.

"What are we going to do instead?" She asks.

"I was thinking maybe we could go hunting again later," I smirk slightly.

"Are you sure Jasper? It hasn't been that long since we last went, and I don't want your eyes to change," Isabella states, uncertainty flowing off her.

"I am sure Bella. Maybe I could invite Emmett and Rose over for the day?"

"I think that would be a good idea."

There is something so easy and natural about having Isabella in my apartment. It isn't a scramble to keep conversations going, or to keep her entertained. We are happy to just sit in silence and enjoy being with one another. That's how it should be.

I pull out my phone and dial Emmett's number. He answers straight away. "Hey honey," Emmett laughs.

"Hey baby," I smile. "Isabella is at my apartment and I was wondering if you and Rose wanted to spend the day here because it's going to be sunny?"

Emmett doesn't even think before shouting yes into the phone. "We'll be over in 15. Just send me your address."

Isabella's Point of View

Barely any time passes before there is a loud banging on the door. Jasper stands and answers before being tackled by his bear-like brother. I laugh.

"Dude I have neighbours," Jasper groans from the ground.

"Oh shit," Emmett laughs, helping the smaller man off the ground. "Hey Bells."

"Hey Emmy," I smile. "Hey Rose."

"Hey Bella," Rose waves before checking out the apartment. "Man you have to let me decorate this place."

"How is things at the house?" Jasper asks Emmett, as he leans against the window sill.

"It's been weird, that's for sure. Alice has hardly left her bedroom, and when she does it's to go see Edward. I overheard them talking yesterday. Alice is watching you closely. Making sure you're okay," Emmett shrugs. "But other than that it's been okay. Esme is devastated and had a few words to Alice after you left." I frown slightly, feeling bad because this was all my fault. If I had kept my mouth shut their family would still be together.

"Don't feel guilty Isabella," Jasper murmurs, taking a seat beside me and wrapping an arm around my shoulder. "This isn't your fault."

"I feel like it is though," I whisper.

"Bella listen," Rose says, coming back in the room. "You've done Jaz a huge favour, you have completely changed everything but you did what was right."

"Yeah Bells. It was a poisonous relationship," Emmett reassures me. I smile at them all, and feel gratitude at these people, these friends of mine.

Victoria's Point of View

"Is Isabella out again?" Laurent asks me as we flick through channels on the television.

"She is spending time with Jasper," I state, knowing where this conversation is about to go.

"She is spending too much time with that boy," Laurent frowns. "She should be maintaining focus on the mission."

"This is her first year of vampirism. Let her have a time to adjust and to make some friends," I shrug. "She is her own person."

"What is she slips? What if she says the wrong thing and gives away our plan?"

"Laurent, I trust Isabella with my life. She will be fine."
