Not long after I had gone to look for Sammie, I ran into this girl that before now, I hadn’t even known existed. “Oh sorry, excuse me!” I quickly said to the girl, trying to make it look like I was in a hurry, which I certainly was.
“Oh it’s ok. I guess I must have got lost day dreaming again.” She said in a soft kind of voice, one that makes people want to trust you. Somehow at first glance she looked like someone that I’d met before but had forgotten about over the years.
“Ok bye!” I replied, rushing past her towards the canteen. For some reason I had a feeling that Sammie might be there.
“Bye.” She called back from behind me, still in that soft voice.
When I reached the canteen I found that Sammie and Lucy were waiting for me by the other door.
“Where have you been, we’ve been waiting for ages?” Sammie said, wanting an answer.
“I was looking for you!” I said.
“Why, we all arranged to meet at the canteen at lunch, remember?”
“Oh yeah right, right sorry!” I said, looking slightly confused but trying not to make it obvious.
“Ok so, anyone hungry?” She asked, but I’d already had a small sandwich earlier when I was looking for her. And I didn’t really fancy anything else. Lucy looked the same.
“No not really.” I replied.
“Me neither.” Lucy joined in. I didn’t even know she was having lunch with us until I saw her with Sammie a few minutes ago.
“Yeah me neither. So do you just want to go and sit by the apple tree for a while or something?” Sammie asked us looking around.
“Yeah ok.” I said and we walked off.
As we made our way towards the tree I kept thinking about Richard, and where he was. Until now, it seemed like ever since he joined our school this week, he’s spent all his time with Lucy. When I couldn’t hold it in any longer, I asked Lucy where he was. “So how come your not hanging out with Richard today?” I asked her, trying to make it seem like a normal question and not that I like him.
“Oh he’s with some new friends that he met at football.” Lucy replied, taking the question the way I hoped she would.
“Like who?” I asked, suddenly having an idea. If his football friends were some people like Jasper, (Sammie’s dream boy) that is on the team, then if they walked by, I would have a reason to stare.
“Oh I only know a few of them. Um, oh yeah there’s Kyle, Henry, Connor, Matt and I think Jasper as well.”
“Wait a minute, slow down! Did you just say Jasper is one of Richard’s friends’?” Sammie said excitedly, suddenly cutting into our conversation and proving my theory right.
“Yeah, I did. Hang on, do you like him?” Lucy asked, looking slightly horrified.
“Maybe?” Sammie said starting to laugh. Pretty soon we were all laughing so much that by the time we got to the tree, we all just collapsed.
After that, no one spoke. A few minutes went by and there was just silence.
“So, um…….” Sammie began to say but was suddenly interrupted by the people walking towards us.
“Hey!” Said a dreamy voice, now peering over us. It was Richard with his new football friends.
“Hey!” We all said together, suddenly feeling dazed. Then we were all speechless. I gazed into his eyes and gave a quiet sigh.
“So shall we all get some lunch so something, I’m staving?” Lucy said, snapping me back to reality.
“Um ok, sure.” I replied, not even sure that she was asking me.
“OK, let’s go! Richard, do you want to come to?” She asked giving him a big smile. For a minute I saw him hesitate, but then gently relaxed. It was clear he likes Lucy as much as I like him, unfortunately.
“Um?” He said looking back at his new mates. I stared to, and after a while one of them slowly nodded. That was Matt, the captain. Before looking back I quickly scanned all of the boys, waiting for their reaction and seeing if Jasper was really one of Richard’s friends. To my horror, he was. I looked at each of them in turn, wondering if I would ever think about asking any of them out, that could be a way of getting over Richard fast. But, none of them looked appealing at all, well except Richard of course, but I can’t really include him. I quickly looked back towards Lucy and Sammie, wondering if I’d missed anything in the conversation.
“Yeah ok, I'm starving too!” He said to Lucy, before turning back to his friends. “I’ll see you guys later.” He said to them, before starting to walk away hand in hand with Lucy.
“Ok, see you Rich!” Shouted Matt. As I stood up peering in their direction for the final time, Henry looked back and gave me a quick wave and smile. There have been loads of rumors going around for weeks that he secretly likes me and about five other girls as well. But even if that’s true, no way would I ever go out with him, ever!
“Let’s go then.” I said, joining Richard and Lucy. “Sammie, Sammie!” I shouted back, now staring at her with no reply. She was still sitting on the grass staring at the football boys now far in the distance. I went over to her and tried to break the trance. It didn’t take a genius to discover why she was still in a gaze. Jasper was still in sight, so I wasn’t expecting her to come back to reality any time soon. “Sammie!” I tried again, and luckily she was back in the real world.
“Huh, what?” She said, looking a little confused.
“You coming to lunch or not?” I asked her.
“Yeah, of course I’m starving! Come on let’s catch up with Lucy and Richard, I’ve got an idea!” She replied giving me one of her cunning smiles. Every time she does, I get the most unsettling feeling in my stomach. Like I already know her new idea is bad news. How right I was.
