As I laid silently in bed the next morning, I thought back to what I thought Luna had said yesterday about Richard. “Don’t let Richard in! It’s important! You can’t! Or……” The memory flashed through my mind. Had she really said it, or was just my imagination.
When I got out the door the next morning, I stared across the street to find Richard waiting for Lucy outside her house. They must be meeting up this morning as there’s no school because it’s Saturday. I tried to ignore him as I walked up the street. As I made my way towards another house to get my neighbor’s dog (to walk while she’s away) I stared back to see if he had noticed me. No, he looks like he’s texting someone. I watched him for a bit, but then carried on walking.
I walked Rosie (the neighbor’s dog) for an hour down the beach then returned her home. As I walked back up the street, I could see Richard from a distance. Surely he couldn’t still be waiting for Lucy. When I reached my house I looked over again. This time he noticed me and waved from across the road. I waved back then made my way in to my house.
When I was inside, the heat and light from the bright sun came streaming through all the open windows. It was a warm day and after all that walking, all felt like doing was going back to bed. As I made my way back to my bedroom the doorbell went. At first I thought it was my mum, saying that she’s forgotten her keys again, but it wasn’t. It was someone I certainly wasn’t expecting.
“Hi!” Said Richard as I opened the door. It looks like he’s given up with Lucy.
“Hi!” I replied, as calmly as possible.
“Um do you know where Lucy is? Because I was meant to meet her at her house an hour ago, only she wasn’t in.”
“No sorry. But I did see her go out early this morning with her mum. Maybe she’s still with her.”
“Yeah maybe.” Then there was an awkward silence. I suddenly realized I hadn’t invited him in.
“Um do you want to come in?” I asked, slightly flustered. And the heat certainly didn’t help.
“Um…” He said unsure, looking back at Lucy’s house again. “…..Yeah thanks.”
“So,” He continued. “Do you know when she’ll be back?” He asked. I wish I had an answer.
“No sorry.” He looked down disappointed. “Why?” I asked curiously. “If you don’t mind me asking.”
“Oh we planned to meet up today only was going to ask her if it’s ok if we meet up later than we said because I’ve got to go somewhere with Matt soon.” He said checking the time.
“Right, ok. Well why didn’t you just call her or text her?”
“I tried, but her phone’s switched off then I ran out of credit.”
“Oh. Well if you want you could wait here until she comes back. She shouldn’t be long now.”
“Oh thanks.” He said smiling. This made me flutter inside and go a little pink.
Then we sat in silence for a few minutes, just staring into space. Then Richard’s phone rang and he jumped up to answer it.
“Hello. Oh hi Matt. Oh, you sure. Alright, yeah cool. Sure no problem. Ok bye.” He said down the phone. When he’d ended the call he sat back down next to me and sighed.
“That was Matt. He can’t make today so I guess I don’t need to call Lucy after all.” He said, smiling again.
“Oh ok. So do you want to go home till it’s time to meet her then?” I asked him. I hoped that he would say no. But I didn’t think he would, and I was right.
