"Is something wrong?" she asked. He shook his head. He leaned closer to her, the springs beneath them creaked. Lucy dropped the phone and the book, because his eyes looked different-smooth around the edges, bottomless onyx-and she knew what was going to happen.

Natsu was going to kiss her.

She didn't move. She didn't know what to do. Their eyes were locked for his entire descent to her lips. His weight came down against her legs, a silent sigh escaping her lips. His lips were gentle, but his hands were firm, pressing into her to wrestle into a new way.

They rolled into each other as his mouth closed around hers. Her fingers crept up his shirt, touching his skin, as smooth as stone. His tongue traced the tip of her tongue. It was silky. She arched her back, wanting to be even closer.

"This is-" he said.

She nodded. "So right."

They gasped for air, then went back in for another kiss. Lucy's history of kisses had been Spin the Bottle pecks, dares, sloppy gropes, and slips of tongue outside of school dances. This was galaxies away.

Was this Natsu? It was like she was kissing someone with whom she'd once shared a powerful affair, the kind Lucy had never allowed herself to desire.

His hands swept her skin as if she were a voluptuous goddess, not the girl he'd known since she joined Fairytail. When had Natsu become so muscular, so sexy? Had he been like this for years and she'd missed it? Or could a kiss, done right, metabolize a body, kicking in an instant growth spurt, making them both so suddenly mature?

She pulled away to look at him. She studied his face and his big, onyx eyes and saw an entirely different person. She was scared and exhilarated, knowing there was no going back after something anything, especially something like this.

"What took you so long?" Her voice was a hoarse whisper.

"To do what?"
"To kiss me."
"I...well..." Natsu frowned, pulled away.

"Wait." She tried to pull him back. Her fingers brushed the back of his neck, which felt suddenly stiff. "I didn't mean to kill the mood."

"There are reasons I've waited so long to kiss you."

"Such as?" She wanted to sound sunny, but she was already wondering: Was it her? Was Lucy so damaged she'd scared Natsu off?

That moments hesitation was all it took for Lucy to convince herself that Natsu saw her the way the rest of the guild saw her-a freak show, bad luck, the last girl any normal guy should pursue. So she blurted out: "I guess you've been busy with Lisanna Strauss."

Natsu's face darkened into a scowl. He rose to the foot of her bed, his arms crossed over his chest. His body language was as distant as the memory of the kiss.

"That is so typical." he said to the ceiling.

"What?"

"It couldn't possibly have anything to do with you. It must be someone else's fault." His contorted face softened into a look of sadness.

"I'm afraid of loosing you again." he muttered, standing to pace around the room.

"'Lose me again?'" she repeated, arching an eyebrow at him. He turned to her with a frown.

"I waited so long to kiss you is because I was reluctant. Reluctant that you would push me away and leave, like everyone else has." Lucy's face softened, and she rose to her feet as well.

"Natsu, I wouldn't ever leave you." She went to rub his arm, but he threw it to the side. Malic begun to spread across his face.

"Don't patronize me! You are like everyone else!"

"What?"

Lucy stumbled backward, her face looking hurt.

"W-What are you-"

"Don't play the victim here!" he shouted, pointing a finger at her. Natsu didn't look like her best friend or the boy she kissed. He looked like someone who resented everything about her. "I don't want to be placated by someone who thinks she's better than everyone else."

He paused, taking a look at her. "But you're different. You're not like everyone else. You're someone who would risk their lives for the sake of others-just like you did in the War of Taratros."

He walked up to her and grabbed her hands in his. "I know you wouldn't leave me, Luce."

"T-Then why did you-"

"I was just making sure of myself."

Lucy's lip twitched into a small smile. "I really, really love you, Lucy."
