I groan as I begin to open my eyes and lift my head up. My head is throbbing, and my whole body aches. I can feel immense pain radiating from my left leg. As my eyes begin to adjust, I see the horrifying scene that lays around me. The first thing I see is my limp sister in the driver's seat next to me.
"Oh my god...oh my god! Serena! Serena!" I scream as I look over at her passed out against the shattered car window. Tears begin swelling in my eyes. What happened?! I think to myself, unable to control my tears and racing heart. I try to open my door, but it won't budge, and neither will the window.
I try to unbuckle my seatbelt, fumbling with it as my hands shake. I finally unlock it and immediately lean over to try and help my sister. I scream in pain after trying to move, as when I look down at my left leg it appears twisted and blood is everywhere. I try to look outside the car, but there is smoke all around. I look over at my sister again, blood running down her forehead.
"Serena! Serena please wake up!" I yell, shoving her shoulder while trying to move little as possible. I begin sobbing uncontrollably. I look around for my phone, finding it on the floor, cracked and covered in blood. I press emergency call and with trembling hands, I dial 911.
"Hello, this is 911, what is your emergency?"
"Hi! My-my name is Alexis Williams, and..and me and my sister Serena have been in a terrible accident! I don't remember where we are. I think- I think a semi hit us! There's a lot of smoke, and...and my sister! Oh my god, I don't think she's breathing!" I sob into the phone, while squeezing my sister's arm, hoping and praying she will wake up.
"Alexis please stay calm. We just received a call from an elderly woman about a crash. Are you currently in a silver Jeep Wrangler?" The operator asks calmly.
"Yes! Yes! This is my sister's car! Please send help! My sister needs to get to the hospital!" I yell into the phone. I move my sister's hair and touch two fingers to her neck. I feel a slow pulse. I sigh in relief.
"Alexis stay on the phone. The ambulance will be there in a few minutes."
The operator continues to ask me questions about what happened but all I can say is that I don't know and it's true. The last thing I remembered was Serena and I were on our way home to Chicago. We were taking some sort of back road. I remember going really fast, and the last thing I saw was the bright headlights of a semi truck coming from the other way.
Since I had woken up, smoke had finally made its way into the car. I begin coughing, trying to cover my mouth and nose with my shirt. I try to move Serena's head off the glass, but it's too far for me to reach. My phone died, and nobody is here yet to help us. I reach for my sister's hand, and after a few moments I black out.
I wake up with a bright light in my eyes. It moves back and forth and then shuts off. I can feel the hard ground beneath me. My eyes adjust and I see a face come into view.
"Alexis? Alexis Williams? Can you hear me?" The man asks, staring at me intensely, waiting for a response. My ears are ringing as I try to focus on his voice.
"My sister...Serena. Where is she? Is she okay?" I ask, trying to sit up. I scream in agony, as the slightest movement sends a shot of pain from my leg through my whole body. I begin to sob again, looking down at my leg, slightly wrapped in gauze.
"Alexis, you need to stay calm. Another ambulance is about a minute out. They are taking your sister first." He says, slightly pushing my shoulder so I would lay back on the ground. I breath heavily, staring up at the starry sky. My vision becomes blurred with my tears. I wipe them away when I see them lifting my sister into the ambulance. Half her face and body is covered in blood and her eyes are shut. I look away as they shut the doors.
The man had walked away and came back with a sweater from my car. He bundles it up and places it under my head. He checks my pulse again and my eyes. This time I actually look at him and notice that he has bright green eyes and orange hair.
When the man moves out of my vision, I am able to see the full scene of what happened. The driver's side of my sister's jeep is completely smashed. The hood is bent upwards and there is smoke coming out. I look to my right and down the road I see the semi. The front of it is smashed also, but not as bad as the jeep. From the distance between the semi and the Jeep, I can tell we must have flipped a couple of times. I see what I assume to be the semi truck driver, along the road talking to two police officers. He looks traumatized, with blood oozing from a gash in his forehead. There is glass and other debris on the road around me. After a minute, the blaring sound of an ambulance comes into focus as one pulls up 10 feet away from me.
The red haired man is back at my side immediately with two other men who have a gurney. On the count of three they all lift me onto it. I yell with pain again, clenching my fists. Tears swell in my eyes as they lift me into the ambulance. The red head is about to leave when I called after him.
"Where are you going?!" I attempt to yell, my voice scratchy. He reappears at the end of ambulance, the bright lights from the inside shining on him. I see that he is actually much younger than I thought, maybe 21.
"I have to sit up front" he states moving aside so a woman can hop into the ambulance next to me. I look over at her and then back at him and my heart begins to race again.
"No, please stay in here with me. Please" I beg. I don't know entirely why I want him here, I think it's because the woman who looks about 40, seems very tense and intimidating, where as he seems a little nervous but calm.
He looks at the woman who I assume is his boss. I know she is going to tell him no. I figure he must be new.
"Please" I state calmly, staring up at the woman. She looks back at him, and lets out a deep sigh. After a moment, she walks to the back and hops out of the ambulance onto the ground.
"I shouldn't even be letting you do this after the stunt you pulled. Make sure to set up her IV" the woman states sternly and then walks to the front of the ambulance. I look at him and see a slight smile cross his face. He seems excited. He hops onto the ambulance and shuts the back doors and then sits down next to me.
I stare at him as he inserts the IV into my arm. I wince a little and take a deep breath. He tells the driver on his walkie that we are all set and the ambulance begins moving, and the sirens begin again. I look up at him as his eyes travel my body nervously, seeming to double check that he's done everything correctly.
"What's your name?" I ask, catching him off guard.
"Ian" he states, leaning over to grab some bandages and then looking back at me with a slight smile.
"Ian Gallagher"
