When I got back to the Five-O headquarters, I walked in to see Lou at the computer with another larger gentleman with long brown curly hair. My hand was gripping my arm, I could feel a cut on top of my head from when I got hit by the car and each breath out was a struggle.

"Bryce," Lou said looking over to me, "Hey guys, we got him. He's back at HQ."

"10-4, Lou," Steve said, "Making our way back."

"You look like hell," Lou said, "What happened out there?"

I just stared at Lou and then at the guy standing behind him, "Who's he?"

"Jerry Ortega," Lou said, "He is a special consultant that works for us. Jerry, meet Dectective Bryce Dent, who is avoiding my question."

I looked back at Lou, let out a deep breath and said, "I ran after Carlos."

"What," Lou asked.

"He was in the crowd," I said rolling my shoulder back, "I saw him and took an advantage. Chased him into this alley way. And---"

"And," Lou said crossing his arms.

"He told me that he didn't kill his aunt, that his boss did," I said.

"Why would his boss do that," Jerry asked.

"He said it was because he had strict orders to kill me and my partner," I said, "And he didn't. This morning, I feel was a failed attempt."

"This might sound very dark," Jerry said, "But then why didn't he kill you in the alley way?"

"He needs me to locate his boss and bring him in," I said.

"And do what exactly to his boss," Lou asked.

I shrugged and as I did, Steve, Danny, Kono and Chin walked in through the double glass doors behind us.

"You should get that checked out," Kono said looking at my head, "What happened?"

"He ran after Carlos and now Carlos wants his help to track down his boss," Lou said crossing his arms.

"Why," Danny asked.

"Apprently, Carlos didn't kill his aunt," Lou said, "His boss did. As punishment for not kill Bryce and his partner."

"And you believed him," Chin asked.

"I know Carlos, alright," I said, "I know that his aunt was the only family that he had left. Why kill off his only family? If you read some of the letters that Interpol had interscepted that were sent to his aunt, you wouldn't even think of convicting him of murdering her."

"Alright, alright," Steve said, "So, what's his boss's name?"

"Carlos said he only did the cash transcations with him and never met him in person," I said, "But, his tag name is the "Chess Player.""

""Chess Player,"" Chin said, "That name came up while I was doing my research, Interpol had a lock on him for years. But he disappeared off the face of the earth just last year. Last known location was a village in Italy called Urbino."

Steve's cell rang, he looked at it and then answered, "Mcgarrett ."

He looked at me with a smile and then said, "I'll tell him."

After he hung up the phone and spoke once more, "Guess who is out of surgery?"

My face broke into a huge smile.

                                                          ------------------------------------------------

Steve accompanied me to the hospital, while Danny and the rest worked on finding out more about Carlos's boss. When we got to the hospital, we made our way to the ICU and meet up with a doctor.

"Doctor Ano," I said, "How is she?"

"She is a fighter," Ano said, "There is no doubt about that. She is resting now but she is still in the red zone."

"Can I see her," I asked.

"Only briefly," Ano said, "She needs all the rest that she can get."

"I will be out here," Steve said putting his hand on my shoulder.

I followed Dr. Ano into the ICU and walked into a room where I saw Nora hooked up to several different machines. She had a tube down her throat, several IV's in her arm and I could see the bandage on her chest creeping through her blue gown.

"I will give you only 2 minutes," Ano said leaving me.

I walked along side Nora's bed and then let out a sharp sigh.

"Hey," I said looking at her sleeping face, "You gave me quite the scare this morning. So much for paradise huh?"

I began to get choked up and said, "I ran into Carlos today. And you think that I would have put a bullet in his head but I didn't."

Her head then tilted over toward me.

"Don't give me that," I said, "I have my reasons. He threatened to kill Brooke and what's worse little Nadia. I have put myself into quite a pickle here. The task force that is working with me, Five-O, doesn't know the exchange that Carlos and I had. What am I going to do? Carlos insists on getting his boss so he can deal with him, but Five-O will never go for that. And if I don't turn him over, a lot of people could die."

Doctor Ano walked in and said, "Time's up, I am sorry Detective."

I nodded and then gave one last look at Nora and walked out into the hallway. I walked into the waiting room where Steve was sitting down.

"How is she," he asked standing up.

"She has been better," I said.

"She seems like a fighter," Steve said, "She will make it."

Steve and I walked out of the hospital and when we got to Steve's truck I looked over my shoulder one more time to the hospital and saw Carlos smiling at me and then nodded before turning away. I let out a sigh and hopped into the truck and went with Steve back to the Five-O headquarters.
