About a week after the strange events began happening, it was time to organize yet another small meeting. This time, Sam invited the current members of the group (me, Heath, Elle, Eghosa, Jack, and Julianna) to a rather large park downtown.

I arrived there third; Sam and Elle were already there. I asked them, "Hey, is Skylar coming?"

Sam shook his head. "Busy."

"Darn."

Up next was Eghosa, and she was followed immediately by Julianna. The former seemed content with being here, the latter not so much.

And finally, Heath and Jack showed up together. Both looked tired and while I could tell that they weren't upset about being here, they weren't happy either.

Now that everyone was here, it was time to begin the discussion. We walked over to the park benches, and each of us took a seat. There was silence for a couple seconds, and then I started the conversation. "Okay, first, let's go over what we've seen so far."

"When Heath and I were taking a walk in the trail near my house, all of the tree branches were gone. For every single tree," Sam said.

"The lake water levels were rising while Mackenzie and I were on a fishing trip," Eghosa added.

"Didn't they eventually build a dam for all the water?" Jack asked.

"Yeah."

Then, no one else said anything. At least, until Elle asked, "Um... so, is that all that's happened to us?"

"I think so," Heath shrugged. "Doesn't seem like much."

"My mom read a news article that the end of the world is being predicted," Julianna commented. "What do you guys think?"

"Um... that's a bit scary," Eghosa replied.

Sam: "Doubt it. The media tends to overreact sometimes."

Me: "I second that."

Jack: "I hope you guys are right. Also, I think I recall hearing about a new plague going around in Europe that just happened out of nowhere."

"Okay... that's a bit freaky," Elle said, although she kept her composure. She told me a while ago she was working on keeping her sanity in check, and try to avoid freaking out over nothing as much. Then she glanced up at the sky and gasped. The next words out of her mouth almost scarred me for life.

"Guys... there's some sort of ship flying above us."

Above our heads, the skies began to darken. The sound of roaring began. A large airship flew down, accompanied by a small UFO-looking object. It was truly horrifying.

As they were flying down slowly, I reached for Sam's arm out of instinct and fear. I couldn't help myself despite knowing it was silly of me. I whispered to him softly, "Sam, this isn't right."

He put a finger to his lips and hushed me, but his facial expression was also worrying. He held me closely as we both looked back up at the ships. A small platform rose down from the UFO, with a man holding a megaphone on it. Eventually, he began speaking.

"Good afternoon, citizens of Earth. The St. David's Tribe has arrived for conquering. No amount of military power is going to save you now," he cackled. He had a sickening nasal quality to his voice, but his accent seemed rather normal. For us, anyways.

The man continued. "But before we get to that, it's time for us to have some fun." It was just then that I realized that I could see the dam from far away. Both the airship and the UFO hovered a few feet away from the structure, and what happened next would haunt me for weeks to come.

Two cannons emerged from the base of the UFO and shot the wooden dam a few times, and the structure began to crumble. A laughing sound emitted from it, and then they both flew off.

Even from a great distance, I could hear the cracking of the dam as it fell apart, seeming to disintegrate. Within seconds, millions of gallons of water exploded from the structure.

With no better idea in mind, the seven of us began running, but the roaring waters behind us moved quickly. The impact of the wave hit unexpectedly, knocking the wind from my lungs as we were shoved under the water.

Now, I'm not a bad swimmer. But I didn't know how the others would fare. That, and the fact that the current's violence was tossing me around, making it impossible to get reoriented. I desperately tried to bring my head above water, but its pressure kept me under. I thought to open my eyes, but I realized that even if I did, it wouldn't do any good.

Finally, right when I thought I was about to run out of breath, I felt the water settle. I poked my head above the surface and gasped, taking a deep, sharp breath, air filling my lungs. I called out, "Hello? Can anyone hear me?"

All around me, I heard the voices of my friends, but they were definitely nowhere near me. I glanced around helplessly, hoping to find a familiar face or two, but I could see no one within a five-mile radius.

I called out some more, but to no avail. Tears began to sting my eyes as I began losing hope of finding my friends in this mad flood. I began swimming furiously, and even though I knew I was moving, I still felt like I was getting nowhere.

I'm standing on Death's doorstep, waiting for the door to open.
