She smoothed out her dress, little five year old Avery West, as she looked at herself in the mirror. She was dressed in her nicest blue summer dress with her small white frilly socks and sneakers. Avery had tried exceptionally hard today, it was a big day after all for her.
"You ready, Avery?" her mommy asked, poking her head around Avery's door.
"Yes Mommy," she said, nodding her little head. She stepped away from the mirror and back towards her bed where her backpack lay. She grabbed onto the straps and hoisted it onto both her shoulders before bounding across to where her mommy stood, dressed in her usual pencil skirt, blazer and incredibly high heels. She grinned brightly up at her mommy who returned it with a small smile and curt nod.
"You have a few moments before we need to leave, go talk to Milo and Adrienne," her mommy ordered. Avery nodded her head and bounced her way across the hallway and towards the grand staircase. With her left hand, she gripped the railing of the staircase as she bounced down each step to prevent herself from falling. She soon made it down and skipped into the living room where she found her two elder siblings already sat with Milo playing a video game and Adrienne flicking through a book. Avery stopped in her tracks and smiled up at both of them, looking between them.
"Excited, Avery?" Milo asked after a few moments of silence.
"You bet," Avery chirped.
"Well you better be a good girl," Adrienne said, shutting her book and resting it down on the coffee table in front of her. "You know that Mom has very high expectations from you and expects you to follow in our footsteps."
"I don't think that's very possible now, is it?" Avery asked with a laugh. "I'm only five, Milo's seven and you're nine. Not much we can achieve at this age is there."
"You know what I mean, Avery," Adrienne said, shooting daggers at her younger sister.
"Well, don't you worry, Adrienne," Avery assured, her eyes twinkling with amusement, "I'll soar through kindergarten."
Adrienne huffed, unimpressed by her younger sister's juvenile and nonchalant behaviour. She crossed her arms over her chest and stood up, leaving the room.
"You should listen to Adrienne, you know," Milo said to Avery once Adrienne had left the room. "She's right. If you want to do good in life, like Mommy and Daddy want us to."
"But Adrienne is just being silly," Avery said, not understanding much what her elder siblings were saying. Avery hated it when they would do this. She thought it wasn't good how at such a young age they were already getting so stuck into their school work. They even put lots of pressure on her as well and she hadn't even started school yet, today was her very first day. Avery that it was silly. She believed that life was for having fun, not working your but off for no reason. She didn't need anything because her mommy and daddy bought everything for her because they had tons of money, so what was the point. Avery didn't understand.
"Whatever kiddo," Milo said, standing up and ruffling her hair as he walked past her.
"Hey!" she exclaimed. "You've ruined my hair. I wanted to look good for my first day. Mommy says I have to make a good impression."
"Whatever, kiddo," Milo repeated again, walking out the room and Avery quickly followed.
"Don't call me that," she said. "You're a kiddo too you know. You're only seven."
"But you're only five so you're more of a kiddo than me," Milo said, sticking his tongue out at her and a look of disgust appeared on her face.
