I Kissed Her Scars
Chapter 2
Still in detention... And still awkwardly trying to make conversation with Emma. She always answered to my small talk very coldly.
"Okay," said Mr. Miller as he walked in, "You may leave now, and make sure that you two don't cause trouble again."
We nodded at him. Then we took our books and walked outside together, with no talking at all.
We then got outside and saw the pouring rain.
"Well shit," she said.
"What is it?"
"I hafta walk home in this weather. Later."
She was walking away, and I felt really bad for her. So, I decided to do a nice thing.
"I can drive you home if you want," I said to her.
She turned around.
"Really?"
"Yea... Just tell me where you live."
"Are you sure this isn't meant to be something that you can use with your friends to make fun of me?"
"No.... Why would you say that?"
"Please, don't act so innocent."
"Excuse me???"
"I see you, Rylan, and Alice at lunch. I hear what you say about me."
"How??? You got that stupid screamo music up to full blast!!! I'm surprised you can even hear yourself think!!!"
"Excuse me???"
"What???"
"Did you just call my music... Stupid and screamo???"
"Problem?"
"First of all, it's my music, and you don't have a right to insult it. And second of all, there's no such music genre as screamo. It's called post-hardcore. Screamo is a term used by jerks who think that post-hardcore is for people who are emo and depressed and always listen to music with screams."
"Well... Isn't that what you are???"
This got her even more pissed off.
"Sanders, here's a couple tips for life. Emo people don't like to be called emo. Emo implies that all it is to us is that we are cutters because we're depressed. We are simply depressed people who are trying to recover. And it isn't just screams in the songs. It's the words in them. So don't you dare bash my music again... Or I bash you."
"Okay, sorry. You want a ride or not???"
"I'll pass."
She walked away again.
"No Emma, come back."
"What do you want now???"
"I can't let you walk home in this rain. Please, let me drive you."
"Fine."
We got into my car, she told me her address, followed by another round of awkward silence.
She put her earbuds in, with her music to full blast so I could partly hear what she was listening to.
"Whatca listening to?" I asked.
"Pierce the Veil."
"Ohhhh... That screa--"
She looked up at me with an angry face like she wanted to slap me.
"That post-hardcore band," I said, trying to cover up the sentence I was actually about to say.
"Better," she said.
"Can you take the earbuds out? Maybe I could listen to em too."
"Whatever happened to that STUPID screamo band???"
"Well... Maybe now if I listen to it, knowing that the songs actually have meaning to them, I might have a different look at them."
She rolled her eyes at me.
"Okay, I'll start the song from the beginning. You sure you wanna listen to it? It's about an 'emo' girl."
"Wow, I thought it was 'depressed yet recovering.'"
She snickered. Probably the first time I ever saw her smile... Even if it was a tiny grin.
"It's called A Match Into Water," she said.
The song began. And it actually wasn't that bad.
"I kissed the scars on her skin,
I still think you're beautiful,
And I don't ever wanna lose my best friend..."
The song went on, while I was trying to pick up the lyrics they were saying. I couldn't understand all, but I could pick up some... They weren't as bad as I thought they were.
"Wow..." was all I could say after the song.
"What's so 'wow'?"
"I dunno... It's not really what I expected..."
"And by that you mean..."
"I thought they were just scream and no lyrics or meaning. But their songs... Actually aren't half bad. And they actually have some really good meaning to them!!!"
"Hmph, congrats Sanders. You are now not my least favourite person in the school."
"Uhm... What a great honour...???"
She chuckled. The second time I ever saw Emma O'Donnel smile... Well having a tiny grin anyway. I gotta say... It was kinda cute.
"Well... We're here," I said to her as I drove to the front of her house. She looked scared to go in.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
"Oh... Nothing..." she said.
"I can tell something is up."
"No. It's nothing."
"Okay, anyway, have a good day."
"Later," she said, closing the car door.
I watched her walk inside, she still seemed frightened for some reason. I kept watching her cuz it was the polite thing to do, make sure the person you drove got back safely.
A man opened the door, a man who I'd assume to be her father.
He looked furious. He started yelling at her. I couldn't quite make out what he was saying, but it was probably how she was home an hour late.
But then a terrible thing happened. Her father slapped her. Then he grabbed her arm real hard and dragged her into the house. And I saw the look on her eyes. Nothing but total fear. Emma O' Donnel was scared... Something I've never seem in her before. I seen depressed. Everyone's only ever known her for being depressed. But she also got scared too... Especially in the presence of her own father.
Sure, me and my dad never totally get along, but I wasn't ever that scared to see him or anything when he was with us.
Could that be why she was so depressed all the time and cut herself? Maybe we all thought wrong about her...
